Ah well, time to call it quits.

It's clear, from comments in another thread that, since I'm at level 90/Endwalker, I should be good at the game and shouldn't find any aspect of it difficult. Sadly, I still do and I guess that there is no excuse for that at this point. And yes, have tried guides/walkthroughs etc but I don't seem to be able to put what I learnt from them into practical use.
Still struggle with most combat, and the fact that I don't seem to be able to beat Venat (who I get the impression isn't supposed to be the most difficult of challenges) suggests I'm just not cut out for this game.

Anyways - thanks for listening and the advice guys! Was appreciated!

That's kind of crazy are you just not dodging the mechanics? Also if you are struggling that much have you tried adjusting your hot keys to something you are more familiar with?

That fight was bs even on WHM. I died like three times cause I missed something obvious. And I've been playing for 8 years now. We all derp sometimes. It's what makes us human and not robotic. I'd step away for a bit. Play another game for a night and come back with fresh eyes.

I guess that isn't bad advice. I don't know - just feel like I'm still missing something; that those who (in the other thread I referenced) say that there isn't any excuse to be useless at the game at this point are right. I mean, I shouldn't be struggling against a B-list 'Boss' such as Venat, should I?

I guess my frame of mind isn't helping much either if I'm honest. Life (R/L) is pretty rubbish at the moment.

It's hard with out reference as to what is going wrong. That fight does deal a lot of damage if you are hit with mechanics.
Even though you are level 90 I think that duty scales you down to 87 - 89 IIRC. Have you got the level 89 class set from the vendor, this can help with stats to push through it.
Also with out knowing more details as to what exactly is going wrong. Do not forget if you are going to take a hit to use defensive CDs if possible, if you have to focus on dodging to heal yourself up some with Second Wind as well.

You can also look up rotation guides and practice them on a dummy if you need to get better muscle memory on your class skills as well. This can also help you if you need to rebind keys that fit better for your play style. Everyone is different so this can be a hard thing to do.

And one advice from me: it is important, that you have a good weapon. The entire game is very DPS centric. Your upgrade path should be: weapon > armor > rings, earrings, necklaces. You can buy good weapons from the market board.

Ah, yes, that fight in Elpis.. don't worry, that's an annoying fight because Venat cheats the Armoury System by changing Jobs mid battle (from PLD to WHM and finally DNC), so you have to adjust your strategy to compensate. That and she throws down a constant barrage of heavy AoE attacks that will quickly make short work of you if you're not kiting her around the battlefield and avoiding those AoEs which is especially crucial for a ranged DPS such as BRD (I failed it myself as PLD several times simply for being a little too slow - lets just say 'Mama' gave Enki a spanking and sent her to bed without her dinner. ).

Don't be afraid to set the Duty to Very Easy if you're not already after failing, as the duty buff is further buffed by doing so, helping a lot (really, unless you're deliberately after a challenge doing it as 'Normal' there is nothing to gain otherwise). But really, it just comes down to sheer luck and running around to avoid her awful AoEs. Making sure you gear is the best you can get at that level as others have said is also crucial too.

Either way, don't give up! You can beat her, you just need to keep a cool head!

Thank you for the advice, everyone - I think weapons/armor is one of the few aspects I don't seem to do too badly with. I purchased the Classical Cavalry Bow from the Market Board as soon as I hit level 90 and spent a good chunk of Gil on a few other level-appropriate items. And have been collecting other items to fill the gap as was progressing through the MSQ.

It's almost definitely more an issue of my lousy reaction speed and inability to get past using either keyboard & mouse or gamepad & mouse. I just can't seem to get my head around using a keyboard-only setup

Having specifics about what's causing problems would help.

If it's dying to mechanics, just try memorize the order stuff happens in and pre-position accordingly because XIV encounters are highly scripted and generally repeat mechanics in same order every time.

If it's a DPS issue on a timed mechanic like the orbs, make sure you're using all of your cooldowns but not wasting the big ones on nearly dead targets and keep your gear up to date.

That sounds a bit...arduous, though if you haven't already toggled it on, legacy movement would likely ease things quite a bit as it removes backpedaling in favor of making you always run in whatever direction you're holding in.
