A game being an RPG does not necessitate its having RNG (especially beyond combat staples like Crit or debuff resist chances), nor has "others are worse" ever been a sign of decent quality.
RNG is one of those strange subjects in MMO's, where every time it comes up you'll have a crowd of players who defend it to the death despite not really having a reason why. Usually the arguments are "it's fine", "it could be worse", "you want everything on a plate!", "it's necessary somehow", "it makes rare things rare!" and so on. While a little RNG is staple in gaming, I don't think players even know why they argue for heavy RNG, it's just become ingrained so deeply into gaming they assume it's somehow for the best.
Pentamelding itself is a mess. It's a system in place to burn the thousands of materia that pour into the economy because they've made materia so easy to get. But they don't want to force everyone to use the system, so they make it largely redundant. Since the system is redundant and materia is easier than ever to get, the whole thing hardly works and materia is worthless after the start of a patch. Materia 9 being "worse" than 8's just confuses newer players too. At this point they might as well scrap it.
But no, we'll never see a rework because we're so focused on how the RNG is "fine" because pentamelds are a waste and materia is dirt cheap.
I'd also be happy to see things like EX mounts being available for totems at release, 1 piece of class loot in level cap dungeons, Bozja notes for a high coin cost, instance TT cards available from NPC's and so on. Grind is fine when there's a clear goal. I'd be digging into that content right now if changes like that existed, instead of ignoring them because I can get the reward with Echo or life is too short to potentially waste 100 hours on something that drops in 5 hours average.
You don't. There are no Expert Recipes announced yet and the next combat set isn't until 6.2. The new DoH/DoL set will be mostly worthless for several months. You're better off running maps for an hour and buying the set dirt cheap with gil a few weeks into the patch.
Coming from korean mmo where upgrading your weapon in itself is RNG
..plus the guarantee of losing your weapon upon failure,
..on top of needing a cash shop item to even upgrade the weapon,
..and another cash shop item to slightly increase the success %,
...the RNG in this game is very forgiving.
True. But RNG is typical for role playing games. I do not know one role playing game without it. And a RNG is not necessarily bad. It can increase the immersion because it is usual, that nothing will work for 100%. And i doubt, that removing the RNG from the game will make the game better. And there are other games, which are far worse than FF14, especially some asian F2P games.
Cheers
if you think RNG is not bad in ff14 then you haven't done true endgame content
savage and bis is mainstream content that is designed to be beatable by normal players
I'm trying to build submarines and it takes me 24h for a chance at obtaining the required materials to advance or to unlock the extra features required to advance.
It is typical for MMORPGs, yes. But not strictly RPGs as a whole. There are also different types of RNG, which makes RPGs and MMORPGs barely comparable.True. Between the farming and the melding it is an unnecessarily tedious process just to eek out a few extra stats, that you then need to reverse and repeat every time you get slightly better gear.
If it were a simple slot-swapping system I wouldn't mind as much but the actual melding process, between the animation delays and the failure chances...it's just not a feel-good mechanic. But I have that issue with several things in the game like crafting and desynth. Actions that require a lot of repetition and just become tedious because of being locked to animations.
It's more for bumping up your ILVL. When you're behind in an expansion, that dungeon gear is going to be useful because you wouldn't have enough tomes to afford the next level cap gear when running MSQ dungeons with a minimum level cap, but are not forced to go buy (supposing there's still stock available) the highest ilvl gear at that level cap from the marketplace to be able to continue.I do think it's bs how you can farm dungeon gear for leveling ones but not for level cap. What's the point ? It's not like dungeon stuff is ever useful in any other content than ultimates (after a few patches so you get the perfect ilvl in dungeons) for perfect minmaxing...
The rest of the RNG is fine, but That...
I’ve cleared P4S 7 times on my two characters (so 14 times today) and won zero drops. RNG sucks in this game
We should have a quiz for those who want changes.RNG is a staple in most games because it is a damn easy way to force replayability. Go through a dungeon have a chance to get an item, yadda yadda. Fine, not to huge, but....RNG on crafting to a point where you could fail 100 times is too much.
I am talking about pentamelding. It is a bit out of hand, and really feels punitive. I get that it is totally optional and all that but it feels tuned wrong.
I would suggest an opposite version of RNG for things like this. Have an RNG chance, that is quite low of getting it early, and then just tell us how many materia it takes to put it on there. So say first slot top tier materia, costs 15, but you have a 5% chance of getting it instantly with every attempt. Just something to make it not feel like a bottomless pit of screw you.
The main quiz should ask simple questions
1) Do you think Everquest and FF11 were good games?
2) Did you think Everquest and FF11 were easy games?
3) Do you find yourself confused why people do not like DKP and now games that have a loot model in which you have modify why those guilds who like DKP must label themselves a DKP Guild as a Scarlet Letter?
4) Do you find MMORPGs you like going free2play or closing down due to barely anyone playing those game?
If you answered yes to any of those questions games made for you typically will not sell and things you like do not sell so what you want does not matter.
