Some of the RNG is nuts...we need to get rid of it

RNG is a staple in most games because it is a damn easy way to force replayability. Go through a dungeon have a chance to get an item, yadda yadda. Fine, not to huge, but....RNG on crafting to a point where you could fail 100 times is too much.

I am talking about pentamelding. It is a bit out of hand, and really feels punitive. I get that it is totally optional and all that but it feels tuned wrong.

I would suggest an opposite version of RNG for things like this. Have an RNG chance, that is quite low of getting it early, and then just tell us how many materia it takes to put it on there. So say first slot top tier materia, costs 15, but you have a 5% chance of getting it instantly with every attempt. Just something to make it not feel like a bottomless pit of screw you.

Penta Melding is just a way to make sure materia gets deleted from the game. If it was always a 100% chance to go in then there'd be too much materia and it would clog inventories in an extreme case.

1-2% increase on every failed meld wouldn't be the end of the world and would still get rid of a ton of materia.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

You're extremely deluded if you think FFXIV has bad RNG.

One doesn't need to be 'extremely deluded' to come to the conclusion that some elements of the game's RNG are extremely tedious.

Then again, it seems to be a trend for certain posters to assume that even justified criticism of the game is worthy of personal attacks.

The drop rate of certain minions and card is so low that people have been farming them for quite some time only to meet with not success. Then there's the drop rate of some of the field notes in Bozja which are locked behind multiple layers of RNG in some cases.

Furthermore, just because other games have greater levels of RNG in play that doesn't mean that it suddenly ceases to be a problem when a lesser level of it is actively embraced here.

I don't think that's a personal attack, it's just... that RNG really isn't that bad. If anything, I often find it too generous, but most probably, that's just a mindset thing.

But you don't even talk about the real issues with RNG, say Fishing, for example. Bozja notes, minions... those are indeed rare, but not impossible to get. Plus... You don't HAVE to finish everything, have every note, every minion. You may want to finish that, but only to the extent that it gives you fun. If it doesn't, just stop.

Those things are valuable and valued because they're rare indeed. If they weren't, there are lots of player, maybe you're part of them, that wouldn't even care about those because they're not rare. RNG is healthy, because it makes it more rewarding to finally get what you want.

Most personal attacks are not and the fact the game doesn't give you everything on a silver plate isn't an issue. The fact you feel offended or that triggered by the fact you don't get your thingies quick enough is an issue. Take a step back and reevaluate what's important.

I know, I know, I've just said that you should get guaranted drops in level cap dungeons, but that's an annoyance, not an issue.

It does in certain places, like Bozja and its field note drops as a more recent example. But overall yeah, it could certainly be much, much worse. I think anyone who complains about bad RNG needs to run ICC 25 heroic in WoW on multiple characters for 7 years before getting a mount to drop like I did and see how bad RNG can really be.

This game has the least RNG I've ever seen in an MMO. When pentamelding you can just buy a stack of 99 and click a button to run through the RNG for you.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

Unless the percentage says 100% chance to succeed you should just assume it's always 1%, you'll be way less disappointed.

The game just could use a hidden loss-counter which would increase the chance of success.
