Has the development team not given a thought to patching in an option to swap out the surname of any given player name with that of a title one has earned throughout gameplay? Obviously, this would be somewhat tricky to implement, and it would be extremely optional considering brand new players wouldn't have the option. But I've always seen this as a golden opportunity for certain races. Instead of using some randomly designated, lore-appropriate (yet not appropriate for Viera) surname for instance, replace my ninja Viera's last name with "The Darkest Shadow."

If this would be too much for cutscenes and NPCs I doubt it would be too much trouble to simply roll out an overhaul patch to replace all instances of NPC's mentioning my last name with merely my first name. Barring that, simply make only certain titles compatible with the "surname replacement" system.

Barring THAT, I just have a meager, humble request of Square-Enix and the lore master(s). Please stop coming up with new races in the lore that have to forego their entire culture along with their NAME just to become the WoL. That would make things much easier for those who like to really dive-deep into the role-playing experience. That would be greeaaat. Have the patch on my desk by Monday. Mmkay Peter?

You say "stop" like it's a recurring thing that they invent races like this, when it's entirely Viera-specific. And it is part of their culture to often change names when they change status.

Also, any "giving up of culture" happened prior to the beginning of the game – voluntary or forced is up to your imagination, but it wasn't because they were called to be the WoL but upon setting out to be a nameless adventurer doing odd jobs.

Okay, my mistake. Viera are the first race to have this little eccentricity added to their own lore. Be that as it may, it is rather irksome that I can't just go with lore-appropriate designations that Square-Enix picks for me when I use that option in the character selection menu. That's all I'm saying.

You could technically get away with never giving up the forest name if you wanted. My Viera, for example, was taken to Eorzea by his adult mentor early in his training to be a wood warder. Said mentor told him to just keep doing what he'd been shown so far and promptly ditched him in the forests of The Black Shroud to go be an adventurer. So my Viera continues to use his forest name while trying to protect (or rather hoard) the little sliver of forest he was told to.

Mine is a Golmore Viera, a Rava. He's also extremely naive and impressionable. As far as he's aware, his mentor didn't do anything wrong by removing the both of them from Golmore. They left because... important reasons! It may be against the Green Word to leave Golmore but clearly they were allowed to do so, otherwise they wouldn't have left! So it's okay!

That is what he'd tell you anyway, and he eagerly awaits the chance to go back home because he thinks everything is just peachy. All in all, it depends upon your own personal story. For whatever reason maybe your (or anyone else's Rava) elected not to give up their forest name. We have outlines of what typically happens in Viera culture but that doesn't mean you have to adhere to it perfectly or else.
