I wish we could at least get some indication that it's coming.
Please I hope sometime this week or after New Years. Really would love to change my name as soon as possible.
considering how uniform these last names are, chances are that they're more akin to the "tia" and "nuhn" titles that sunseeker men use, rather than traditional surnames. i hope there's some official word on what they actually mean in practice soon, though
That's what I'm expecting, which makes it even more important to understand what they mean before picking one.
As there are 12 names for each clan - 12 for Veena, 2x6 for Rava - my guess is that they don't refer to something alike to tia/nunh but instead to region or something else. Veena and Rava share a lot of culture except for their following of the Green Word and locale. There's a chance the Djt- or Rehw- prefixes on Rava names refer to whether they follow or have broken the Green Word, but as all PC Rava men have by definition left Golmore (and thus broken it), it makes no sense for it to be an option.
There has to be some significance around there being 12 names, I think. Given how closely related they are (in the case of Veena) as well as how restrictive, it only makes sense that it defines them along a category that can be split into 12 or 2x6, so... regions, birth months, something like that. Keep in mind that ordinarily Viera men would have very little use for a surname since they belong to no village and meet very few people. It makes sense, then, that their surname is a utility used by women when they do visit a village. Guess we can only know for sure when they tell us, but it's food for thought.
Can't believe I never thought of birth months. That makes so much sense, especially with the Rava set being "split" the way it is. The Eorzean calendar has a similar system with the whole Astral/Umbral thing, so it matches up nicely. There has to be some significance around there being 12 names, I think. My mind immediately went to 'something something Zodiac' while skipping directly over the birth month step regarding the number, but I agree that it makes a lot of sense.
At this point I'm wondering if they're planning to wait until female Hrothgar are released to put both documents out together...
I would genuinely love to have female Hrothgar names at the same time, but the tiny possibility of them waiting for their release to post male Viera naming conventions is one of my biggest, and probably most ridiculous, fears lol.
People can already play male Viera. They're going to have players want to abide to their lore and flesh out their backstories (myself included) as soon as possible, since they're finally a reality. It'd be less annoying and easier to guess if their surnames actually were the same as female Viera, but they are clearly deliberately different and hold some sort of cultural significance specific to them.
Right now I suppose we can only hope to hear something around the 4th, once the community team returns...
