What are the actual roadblocks with alts in FFXIV?

I've also tried twice to level a healer, only to just give up and grab a DPS job instead because I just don't like healing. Highest I've made it was Shinryu before I just.....didn't want to do it anymore. This one's purely a me problem, of course.

MSQ alts are the best way to level a job you don't want to do, though, since you can get all the EXP through questing and just swap to something else for the dungeons.

Though for healer in particular, you can just level summoner instead and drag scholar along for the ride.

One can certainly benefit from maintaining an alt on every server in their data center. The kind of economic control you an exercise with that setup is not to be underestimated.

That's how I did most of them on my main in Shadowbringers. But I wanted to try leveling one character as a pure healer. It just didn't work out.

Didn't help that I also seem to end up with badly undergeared tanks a lot, for some reason. Ironworks gear is not appropriate for Bardam's Mettle, dammit.

For me the only barrier is that I have too much I want to still do on my main. Someday I may make an alt to do the story all at once - since it may hit better than doing each expansion every two years. I'd love to revisit things with a new perspective now that I know what will happen.

If you want to do the MSQ again and experience the new trusts through the story, just use new game+.

You can just redo the story on your main. You can even choose which parts you want to start at.

The barriers for me is simply just needing the redo all the aethercurrents. Which they've addressed for the most part by condensing them down for the past expansions. Beyond that, just the obvious ones like the amount of questing you need to do, especially in A Realm Reborn.

The caveats you have, or the roadblocks just depend entirely on what you wish to use the alt for. If it's for raiding then you're just doubling up on the amount of upkeep for your characters. E.g. needing to do roulettes on both characters, or reclears. Equally, if you're using an alt character for something such as crafting then the roadblocks are just similar except you're doubling up on the amount of questing and melding you need to do.

You do not need to pay more per month for alts. The cheapest option allows for 1 active character per world.

If you purchase the 6 months sub, it has the same price as the single cheapest month available for non 1.0, and with that u can have alts in the same server.

If you want to ultimately have an alt for the sake of having an alt, then New Game Plus is a waste of time. All that running around could be levelling up your new character and earning them money and gear, and instead if you NG+ it you're just getting the story and nothing else.

The benefit of NG+ to me is selectively replaying chapters without getting through the whole story again. If you want to play the whole thing from start to finish, an alt is the better choice.
