I did make an alt to build a second FC room to test out some housing ideas without messing with my main's room or house.
Yes, alts can have their own FC chambers.
The only minor roadblock was having to rank up in the grand company to actually gain the ability to purchase a room, and it wasn't that difficult.

As someone with several characters done with the current 6.0 stuff...theres no real roadblock past time and maybe luck if you've got your heart set on a specific glam/mount/title that requires rng. Gil is not a problem because MSQ dumps both gil and hq items you can hawk off. Leveling is (imo) incredibly easy now between roulettes, potd, hoh, beast tribes, etc. MSQ can be skipped with the jump pots but imo it flies by pretty fast anywho with just skipping cutscenes you don't care to watch again.

I’m almost tempted to make an alt just so I have a clean inventory and glamour chest for a couple jobs. The hoarding clutter gets very real when you have a bunch of jobs at 90. I admittedly packrat way too much.

just FYI, you can have the standard sub (up to 8 characters on the same world) for the same price as entry level (1 character per world), if you pay 6 months of sub at once.

If you are thinking of doing alts, you probably will be playing at least one 6 month block.

That explains why I've never realized an additional cost. I've always subscribed in 6 month blocks. Nice to know.

As a 1000 days /played WoW refugee, I came into FFXIV last year fully expecting to create an army of alts to match my 50-character army on WoW. In fact, for quite a while, as I was learning the ins and outs of this game, I kept up that train of thought.

Now, though, /30 days played here on FF, and the job system has replaced my need for alts.

I mean, with WoW, the primary focus of alts, for me, was to experience the different classes and specs (jobs being the FFXIV equivalent). I also liked to have uniquely dressed characters, and I wanted access to every crafting profession so I could reap the benefits of all of them. That was it, for me.

So, in FFXIV I can experience every different "class and spec" (read: job) by simply equipping the relevant equipment. Along with that I can create unique glamours for each job, and I can level up all crafting professions. I have access to all my mounts and pets whether I am a Bard, a Summoner, a Fisherman, etc. Cool beans.

What's lacking, for me, are two things:

    1. My "core" character always stays a male Au'Ra (barring paid character services). Eh. I'd prefer different races and genders but the varying glamours are suiting me fine for now.

    2. No clear and easy way to level up alternate jobs. My first job was leveled via MSQ, second job leveling by all the remaining side-quests. When I do my third and fourth I have things like Palace of the Dead and Beast Tribe quests to explore. When I get into the realm of my eighth, ninth job, though, I am not exactly sure what I'll be doing. Spamming PF? PotD for the third time? It's gonna be uber-repetitive.

Thing is, I am still at the stage in this game where "uber-repetitive" is quite fun, so I'm in a good spot right now.

Whether or not there are barriers depends on why you want to have the alts in the first place.

I don't intend for my alts to be mirrors of each others and so see no barriers. I mainly create them for replaying MSQ (I enjoy experiencing the character progression as I go through the story over roflstomping through NG+ with a max level job) though occasionally I get attached enough to an alt I keep it instead of deleting it when I'm finished. If I want an item on one alt that I already have on another, it's usually easy to farm using the alt.

Personally I find the attitude that one shouldn't have to play an alt to get what you want on the alt confusing. Why bother with an alt if you don't want to play the character? Fantasia exists if you want play as a different race. Every character can learn all the classes/jobs in the game. I've heard the RP arguments yet if you want to create a bunch of Mary Sue characters that have it all, there are other places to do that where no game play is required. This is still a game where game play is expected to get what you want on a character.

Hopefully the glamour dresser expansion in 6.2 will help you out.

    Hi, hi!

So I'm one of those nuts that levels every job to cap, and I also have 3 alts (the highest is 80 and just starting Shadowbringers. Off topic of Alts, but on your "what do I do to level up!?"

Best XP/Time Spent for my tastes for combat jobs:
    1) Duty Finder roulette, specifically Alliance/Leveling/Trial . 50/60/70 can give pretty lousy XP for the time, and MSQ is looooong and boring..but can be good with Netflix...
    2) Beast Tribe Quests for the levels their expansion is relevant (eg. the pixies give ideal XP from 70-80)
    3) Deep Dungeon, with friends (random parties work, but your mileage may vary greatly)
    4) "Niche Play". Things like running fates when lots of people are doing them/Bozja/Eureka can give great XP IF a lot of people are doing them and burning through them quickly.
    5) Do the highest level dungeon you can do.
    6) Thancred and Chill: Trust Dungeons with Netflix. Not fast, not exciting, but you also don't even have to play the game if you're DPS. You can literally run up to a pack of mobs and let the NPCs do all the work. The only exception is avoiding boss mechanics.

If I didn't plan on using a FC chest or asking a trusted friend for help transferring gil and items from time to time, for me that would be a roadblock. Maybe my main alt would still be where she is now, but maybe not. I don't like the economic side of the game enough to want to mess around with it twice as much, so her retainers almost never have anything for sale.

Some people don't like repeating the msq and other questlines but experiencing those as a different character is a big part of why I enjoy alts.

I have some alts. Two alts are for trolling other people, one catgirl alt because i do not want to throw phantasias all the time. And one alt on Crystal because of visiting clubs in NA.

    Cheers

The main roadblocks I run into on alts are a couple of parts of the story that just kinda drag. The post-Stormblood patches, especially. One of my alts is just about up to the whole mess with Tsuyu and Asahi, and....ugh. Just have to push through it.

I've also tried twice to level a healer, only to just give up and grab a DPS job instead because I just don't like healing. Highest I've made it was Shinryu before I just.....didn't want to do it anymore. This one's purely a me problem, of course.
