NFTs are an interesting technology that is sadly being poorly explained and implemented.
NFTs are an interesting technology that is sadly being poorly explained and implemented.
Why is it unpleasant?
NFT's actually does have some interesting potential applications, it's just that per usual people take shit and get cringe about it ( remember the Gamestop thing? ).
NFT's aren't some inherently negative thing.
What Im mainly worried about NFT wise is Square producing a proprietary NFT marketplace where the NFTs give generic non-crypto game benefits to incentivise you to invest and speculate on them.
E.g. "We produced 1000 artworks by Square artists. Each is a hyperlink to a jpeg we store that you can trade with each other, it will also unlock a non-unique minion in FFXIV and non-unique summon material in FF7"
If it's not XIV related, don't really care?
Please show support for chocobo boots to be added -> http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/323512-Suggestion-for-an-item-to-be-added-to-gold-saucer-Chocobo-Boots
Unhappy with how they implemented Mahjong? -> http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/381358-Mahjong-is-the-most-depressing-mini-game-you-ve-added-to-XIV
Aimee's exact English words are:
"We don't intend on incorporating an NFT element at this point"
"At this time we dont have any intentions to incorporate that into the game"

As a technology sure, not inherently negative. But their main draw for all these corporations is in being able to create marketplaces around artificially scarce goods and take a cut on speculation. Which would be inherently negative. So I think calling that specifically out is good.
Any scenario where even part of the goal is widespread speculation on digital goods that are artificially scarce is a negative imo
I didn't hear exactly what he said but it sounds to me like he was basically just like '' yeah NFT's are interesting '' since he said they won't be put into FFXIV.As a technology sure, not inherently negative. Someone who's interested in technology finding NFT's interesting isn't surprising to me at all I think that the whole premise of this thread is kinda just making something out of nothing.
I think people get a bit too hung up on the whole lazy art NFT's ( often times stolen work ), there's a lot of potentially really nice applications of NFT's particularly when it comes to stuff like credentials, identification and other records like medical records etc.
Both in regards to avoiding paperwork and security.
For a Japanese person it's probably especially interesting considering how much worse it is in Japan with this, they're pretty outdated and are infamous for a ridiculous amount of paperwork.
NFT are glorified CD-keys.
And artificial scarcity is asinine in a digital game.
better to voice our discontent now and prevent the idea from growing until it can't be stopped.
To me, I personally hoped Yoshi would be a voice of reason in square to keep them from exploiting the players with NFTs.
The thing is corporations are only interested in the lazy art nfts. Because the only way to make money out of it is to take a cut of speculation. The best case scenario is skins or generic goods that 'acquire and keep traits... So you can engage in market speculation on themI think people get a bit too hung up on the whole lazy art NFT's ( often times stolen work ), there's a lot of potentially really nice applications of NFT's particularly when it comes to stuff like credentials, identification and other records like medical records etc.

I highly recommend the Folding Ideas video essay on NFTs if you think NFT medical records are a good idea.
