They dont need to branch from the class Archer

It could be a new JOB only job that starts at 70 and has no ties to archer guild at all


Id love to see a Ranger/Warden thats like the DnD Neverwinter style , one with the forest that calls on root/tree attacks for aoe and cc as well as bow main hand and dagger/sword off hand for ranged and cqc attack styles.

As much as I originally hated the idea of archer bard all the way back to when it was introduced in 1.0 and refused to play it at first, there’s only a handful of abilities that are even “bard-y” and the vast majority of the time you’re doing archer stuff. Most of the job revolves around procs to do special arrow attacks which is what I’d imagine an archer of a different flavor would be doing anyway. If you’re stubborn enough, you could just equip the deepshadow crossbow for bard and just headcanon the songs as stances.

The other problem is that right now ranged physical DPS are support classes, with varying ranges of support and MCH already being the “selfish” ranged physical DPS so I don’t really see us getting a second one until SE gets off their butts and overhauls the whole scope of ranged physical DPS. Coming up with new class ideas can be fun, but they need to exist in an already crowded space where SE kind of does a poor job of balancing.

What gimmicks would a new ranged physical DPS be able to pull off for it to stand out and do something different that the existing ones can’t do without upsetting the balance and upsetting the players of other ranged physical DPS jobs?

If they allowed the existing classes to branch out and do more things beyond “varying scales of personal DPS and boosting everyone else’s DPS”, I feel like there would be more room for new additions but the dev team seems more focused on making gameplay based on boss HP bars going down and tight, choreographed fights so I don’t see a lot of suggestions here working out. Additionally, pets have been slowly pushed out and the man himself mentioned Beastmaster as a possible limited job so be careful what you wish for.

Really, what is so wrong with just adding a DEDICATED archer job that is primarily for ranged dps? As someone mentioned earlier, it could be added as another spinoff from the archer. But while the bard is more of a generalist with support abilities, the new archer job could simply be just focused on dpsing. Is it too much to ask for that?

Because the songs don't do anything but buff DPS and there are only two abilities that can reduce damage or increase healing, both on a long cool down. The "support" Bards give is pretty minimal on the whole and the majority of the time is spent using archer abilities.

Sometimes I have to wonder if people who complain about Bard have ever actually played it to any extent.

I would love if they separated bard and archer. I love the rogue-like classes and I'd happily be an archer all day if I could keep that class without having to play music (I play enough instruments in daily life haha)

Perhaps I should have been more specific and said selfish dps like black mages. I consider buffing dps of others to be in the support category. I would be interested in seeing a PHYSICAL ranged dps job that matches somewhat the MAGICAL ranged dps category that is inhabited by black mages.

We already are supposed to have that.

In theory Machinist is supposed to be the selfish physical ranged DPS because it does not have the support capabilities of the others but due to how SE decided to balance things it also does not have the DPS of Samurai or Black Mage. That could change if we went back to the old HW gauss barrel and bow mage casting mechanics but those were removed. Considering how they took away most of SMN's casting spells, high mobility seems to be how SE wants to have the game played so I don't see that coming back at all unless all the ranged jobs got warps like BLM does.

That brings me back to "why would they add another selfish ranged physical DPS when we already have one?" and "what could a new job in this class of jobs bring that would make it different than the others?".

I'd like it if they made bard something that required archer lvl 30 to unlock but it stood as its own job instead of being like smn/sch. It would mean you'd have to level it separately from archer/its job upgrade but I'd be ok with that. The only reason they wanted barcher in 1.0 to begin with was because there was no dedicated support job in the game and they weren't adding any new classes, just job upgrades to existing ones. As soon as ARR came around they should've immediately trashed that and redid it but I guess they wanted to keep it in for people who came to like barcher and didn't want to see it go. But really, the direction of that job is unsustainable, and I say that as someone who used to main it through the end of sb and shb. Balance between the archer and bard aspects of its aesthetic just isn't happening, and the actual gameplay is never solid. Fun (well not anymore), but not solid. If they made Ranger as an upgrade for archer then I could see them leaning more into dots, debuffs, and procs for active play, which was the fun dps aspect of sb-shb brd. Then you could have bard as a healer with a heavily support-based kit.
