It's fairly common practice in the region the game is from. In Lost Ark's case there isn't any body proportion customization either, so I'd assume it's a cheap and lazy way of maintaining combat animation fidelity. I think they acknowledged that NA players aren't happy with gender-locks, and that they'd be working towards addressing it in the future.

FFXIV has, and still does have gender-locking in the form of Hrothgar. Viera, Miq'ote and Roegadyn have all had gender-locks at different points in the games history as well.

And yes. It is 100% pay to win. Asmongold leveled up yesterday by opening a loot crate item on stream. He got exp for open a chest lmao.

In 1.0, roe and highlanders were male only, and miqo were female only.

Highlander hyur were also genderlocked in 1.0 too (you could only play males in that) - it's why Minfilia for instance always had a Midlander model despite technically and lore wise being Highlander.

That should be enough of a response but honestly im not sure what you mean. I like a lot of character customization in game. My characters dont always look like me IRL, obviously as a miqo'te lol. But they look the way I want them to and reflect what I want to create.

If I want to play Lost Ark and be a wizard type character, basically as a sorceress, my only option prances around like a hooters girl and dressed like she is ready for the casting couch. Some people like that okay cool. Not for me.

I know this is not the case for everyone, but I am very married to the idea of this character. His looks, his backstory, his personality, his name. Everything. My characters appearance in an RPG is important to me. Its okay if its not to others. It has nothing to do with "being made fun of" for playing a girl lol.

I guess my question is that if it's so aesthetically unpleasing then why are you torturing yourself playing it? It was like when I was growing up and hearing some in my class say they hated tomb raider because you had to play as a girl. They played through it all and bough 2 and 3 later on but why let that be such a hang up if the game is that fun to play? It's very odd when I hear people complain about not being able to play as one or another sex/race. It would be nice as an option but I would rather have a slick looking/playing game over "customization".

And thats cool, nothing wrong with that. Everyone has their preferences for games and entertainment. Ive invested thousands of hours into things like The Sims and VR chat, creating worlds and avatars and importing them from other games so appearance and cosmetic/customization is very important to me, not everyone.

As far as the game being unpleasing, well Ive only been playing a couple days and trying to keep an open mind. A lot of people say it gets better, but yes if im not entertained soon I will quit for sure. I remember how I did not like this game at all the first 4 times I tried it, but now its my favorite game of all time, so im giving it a chance but in a thread about Lost Ark, I will comment on the things I dont like about it lol.

A lot of mmorpg players like to use their character as an extension of themselves, especially FFXIV players. Granted, customization and player choice is a valid reason to dislike genderlocks. It's less of an issue for players that don't mind playing either.

I'll try the game - free - I am not paying money for it. I'll start downloading it. Not like I have much to do in FFXIV, at the moment. Aside from grinding for gold saucer mounts, capping out weekly tomes, and doing the weekly raids. I have heard this game becomes quite grindy and pay to win later on - sounds like a typical Korean mmorpg, so not really surprised if it's the case.

People want to be immersed in the experience and being immersed is just different from person to person. Same reason as to why some people don't like playing Lalas or Hrothgars for the MSQ, it takes them right out of the story/gameplay. I doubt it's torture to play it, it just makes the experience a bit less fun lol.

I usually don't care one way or the other, but I like being able to create my own character and being locked out of options because you picked a certain race/class is a bummer. My one common complaint is that usually with genderlocked classes the outfits tend to be super racy for females, and I also dislike that lol. I like playing as Lalas since they can look androgynous. Especially for games like XIV or Lost Ark, gender locking classes is just pointless.
