Playing 1 mmorpg and 1 offline game has always been the way for me. The games may change, started Everquest way back yonder for the mmorpg one, but it allows me not to use up all there is to an online game. The community I become a part of has a strong pull to play online all the time, but friends who know me also know I take offline breaks and if I feel the need to game, I will load up something on Steam or others venues for my time gaming.

Or, I will just go visit friends in person or do things like watch a season or two of my favorite shows or a movie.

In short, I think breaks from games are fantastic and healthy.

and look at WoW now, complete garbage, never actively listen to the playerbase, I'm glad FFXIV is not WoW.

It's actually not exclusively a Yoshi-P or XIV thing. Even FFXI, back in 2002/2003 and even today, always has a prompted disclaimer to the player base when you login that tells you to not forget about your family and friends and to go outside and live your life lol. Companies generally don't want to be responsible for the inevitable stupidity that the people will act on. It at least covers their grounds legally (a perceived danger during those early years of the internet and modern games) and is a morally sound thing to do. The amount of people who take that message as an offense or even a remotely negative thing is minimal, but they ARE the folks that are likely the problem people in question. Over the decades of the world witnessing how obsessed people can be with their entertainment, it's generally a good idea to encourage people to not develop said obsession. A dead or burnt out player likely isn't a paying one.

As someone who greatly enjoys MMO's, I actually like being able to take a break in FFXIV without worrying about falling behind. It actually promotes a healthier life style.

I don’t know why the producer and director would want people that don’t want to play his game to play his game. I could see him wanting to convince people to try his game, maybe even making the game as welcoming as possible, or encouraging and advertising to anyone and everyone to give it a shot.

Why take feedback from players that are playing if you know they’re only playing because they’re obligated to do so? Do you think those players would be any fun to be around? Do you think players that just don’t want to be there — or who punch in and out as if the game is a job — can really be trusted to pin down actionable suggestions for “fun” when they’ll convince themselves they should grind through hours of usurious retention mechanics because the time wasted is somehow “worth it” for thirty minutes of fun?

Concerning the whole housing thing, i think it’s a bit hypocritical to say players should take a break from the game every now and then, but then have something time consuming and time gating like housing limit you to only being away for 45 days. Especially when this was stated long ago that it would never be a thing.

In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Yes, and then we had players leave and never come back, holding limited houses which weren't being used.

The PLAYERS requested the change to housing with a demolition system. So the devs added it.

45 days is pretty long, all things considered. There are a couple things to keep in mind though regarding that time limit existing and the loss of property.

    1) The devs stupidly built the housing system with the false impression that what limited amounts there were was going to be good enough. This was the earlier days of the team, where they failed or half-assed things way more often than people care to remember. Perhaps that was due to many limitations out of their control (e.g. funding). Regardless, that limitation is what sparked the decision to have that time limit. It's to be "fair" to all players that want to take part in the housing system, given the way they chose to make it.

    2) With 1 in mind, do note that it's not like he's telling people to take breaks in specific quantities or time away from the game to equal taking months off. If you're playing other games, chances are you're not going to be spending 45 days on them with no free time to play XIV throughout that entire span of time. Taking a break from the game is a personal choice, not one he's dictating. If you feel you need to do that, do it. It's that simple. Failing to understand that is pretty common, as sad as that is to say. It is the right outlook though. If people can't wrap their heads around needing to take a break, when they clearly need to, again... that's a personal choice to actually feel like you need to stay as though someone is demanding it or pointing a gun at you.

Well to be fair, reaching things in WoW is about 50 times longer than in FF14.

Even if it’s old content where you’re trying to get something, because everything still has the time and ID lock gatekeeping in place, coupled with abysmal % chances. Like in FF I farmed the pony mounts including the one for having all in 15 minutes. Try doing that in WoW.
