I had to take a break from EW msq for a while because it was so depressing for me. It was not as much the scene you quoted above as it was other overlying themes that were repeated continuously. After the break from msq grinding, I was fine and went on to continue and really enjoy it. Endwalker is by far my favorite of all the expansions.

I think the warning that SE has at the launch of the game is sufficient enough to let us know some things will trigger people.

The totality of the Endwalker message is very positive.

It is all about how the real purpose of existence is the journey of life. It’s not about suffering not celebrating but the process of being. Live in love, and you have your meaning and purpose.

Endwalker is all about rejecting the idea that existence is suffering.

That one NPC chose the coward’s way out and abandoned his people and his duty to their fate was to my eyes a message of why such a choice is wrong. It left his people in a state of desperation they had to be rescued from. And it was only by rejecting him that they began to recover.

This goes against what Lucia says though, and they wouldn’t give us her perspective as the player unless it held at least a modicum of truth. He didn’t abandon his people, he knew his choice would help solidify their protection. If he wanted to screw them over he’d have told them to stay there and not leave. He told them beforehand they were relieved. I think it’s a bit too easy for people to critique someone when they’re in a horrific situation none of us will ever even be close in having to live through. He did what at that point he deemed necessary to keep his people alive while still keeping his own morals and values alive. The Garleans are a proud people who died from the very likes of the people who were rescuing them. It’s the sad reality of that world. I would hardly consider what he did cowardice, as it takes a lot to take your own life. Again it’s easy for people to judge when they aren’t in that situation. But even Lucia, a defector understood why he most likely did what he did, and that’s what resonates.

In my opinion, it was very tastefully done.

You see the aftermath, but it cuts before you actually see the act.

I feel like art and stories aren't allowed to be serious and provocative anymore. Artists and writers are being pushed to dullen their stories for fear of 'triggering' certain individuals at the detriment of the story as a whole.

I applaud FFXIV for not pulling punches and writing stories that have darker themes.

Also, I am not too sure about this but the ESRB rating for this game DOES include 'Violence'. Am I to assume this also includes suicide?

Art certainly should be serious and provocative, but people also should be given the option to skip certain scenes. These aren't mutually exclusive goals.

If there was a warning of violent nature, it would IMMEDIATELY spoil the cutscene, what made it good for me was the shocking nature of it.

When the Legatus of the first legion kills himself with a gun, I had to seriously consider my own mental health. I have a lot of depression and have had a history of suicidal thoughts at times. The way that the story shows the suicide, and then the aftermath of his loss actually helping the united front in Garlmald really made me shake a bit to the point I had to get some rest.

It might of been that I had stayed up for so long, and the fact that the Garlmald part of the story is DARK. Its as dark if not darker than the entirety of the first, and it goes like this for hours.. with the conclusion being well.. that.

Had to debate upon myself if also taking a similar action would help my loved ones, and I had to seriously take a break and catch myself with that thought.. I am okay now, but it really wasn't a fun thing to process.

Square Enix, please consider putting a trigger warning if you ever put suicide in the game again; BEFORE the cutscene begins. Just say in addition to the time that you need to invest to watch the cutscene, that the content may very well affect those struggling with poor mental health, that you advise watching it at a time when you can mentally handle content which may be hard on the mind.

Cutscenes like this REALLLY need trigger warnings. Not just for adults like me, but if any teens are playing this, I can't imagine being in their shoes. When I was growing up my mental health was even worse than now, because it can be hard to adjust to life with these subjects. Especially if you have never had a suicidal thought until recently, and you don't know what getting through it feels like. Getting through it the first few times is always the hardest. You have to learn the coping skills, and get some help.

Se is not responsible to manage or protect your poor mental health. That's both your and the Therapist's job.
I'm all for a more mature, extreme, or just plain realistic approach to the story rather than flowers and sunshine (Which is something I dislike about the last part in EW 6.0 MSQ)
