If a plague spreads across Eorzea next week and Y'shtola catches it and dies, then it not only shows that the plague is a threat but establishes a sense of danger and urgency that doesn't come with, say, temporarily promoting Riol into a position of prominence only to have him be the one to perish.

If fireballs are falling from the sky and one of them strikes G'raha head on and leaves him as nothing more than a mass of charred bones and burnt flesh then it hits differently to just having a group of random, generic NPC's die in the background.

Many JRPG's - including other Final Fantasy games - have not avoided having major character deaths that advanced the story in a way that made sense. I can't help but think that some people dismiss the idea of any death whatsoever as a way to shield their favourite characters from any and all consequences.
That's literally it though. I mean someone here posted how wanting a good character to die makes you a "creep"... People get overly attached to characters just because they "don't deserve" to die.

It's fine to be very immersed and hope for the best for your favorite characters, but at the end of the day characters are just one of the many instruments to tell a story, and sometimes they perish or get completely undeserved misery because A) That's how life freaking works and B) When nothing grave happens to any of the good guys it makes it very hard to take the gravity or tension seriously in the plot.

This doesn't have to be a character death, but it should be something more than sending a character to the infirmary for a bit. Or a supposedly devastating attack on a base that the good guys...don't even have to retreat from afterwards.

I'd prefer not to fridge Alisae just for the sake of Alph's development. If a scion dies it should be as the culmination of their own arc, not to feed the development of a different character.
So I take it you hated what happened near the end of 3.55?

I'd like to see the Eorzean leaders taken out with one fell swoop, a big assassination that shakes up the face of Eorzean politics.

Who do I 'hope' dies? Zenos and Fandaniel, but considering their roles that's a near given. I don't hope any good guy dies because I don't think you need to start killing off main characters for shock value. Do I expect some may? Yes. I expect some characters may be more likely to meet their end in Endwalker. Thancred comes to mind. While I roll my eyes at the mindset of some being 'his development is done, so let's kill him off!', it's not exactly unrealistic as a character whose tale has concluded and may not have something new lined up is a natural pick for say.. a heroic sacrifice? See Minfilia for this exact ending. I suppose Urianger might be at risk as well, it's hard to really think of the avenues he may yet go.

Some others have a chance at dying as well.. one could argue Y'shtola, I feel like in Endwalker they'll either outright kill her.. or not touch her at all.. we've had too many fakeouts from her and twice in a row in SB and SHB.. so again in Endwalker I find difficult to imagine, again I think they'll either outright kill her with no ambiguity to it, or not touch her at all. I suppose it depends on whether or not they want to keep a character as popular as her around, there's many characters that people would much more love to see die, I see the twins cited often, Lyse especially, so they've got plenty of 'low hanging fruit' if they really want to kill one or two scions.

It can, absolutely. If done well. And SE has shown that they can do a character death well.

It's just that they also have shown that they can do it poorly, aaaand haven't really... Done anything other than death as a major consequence in a while? At least on an individual character scale. Like not a lot of characters have had any other form of major sacrifice - the only ones coming to the top of my mind are Thancred and Yshtola losing access to aether and sight all the way back in heavenward, G'raha locking himself in the tower for nobody-knew-how-long, and Minfilia's time playing Avatar of Her Crystalness (and then dying).

I dunno, I guess the last few "major" deaths just haven't had much of an impact on me. Even Tesleen, which yeah I cried, also pissed me off because the way it was framed had my character close enough to do something and then not doing something. Papalymo's death was annoying. I didn't care about Minfilia and wasn't sad to see her go. I felt worse about Elidibus than half of the allies who have died recently which is actually kinda wild thinking about it now. Huh.

Anyway. All I'm saying is that death isn't the only, or even the most interesting, narrative tool or consequence. Am I a little biased because I like all of the Scions and want them to live? Yeah, of course. But I also just... I dunno, I guess I just don't understand all the posts just wanting them to be killed off out of hand. To each their own though.

Though on second thought, given how much I super didn't care about Minfilia dying, maybe I do understand a little lmao

I have no idea how or why this would happen but now I'm REALLY curious who would end up taking their places

Hope? G'raha Tia and Y'shtolla. Fan circlejerking characters ruin the narrative, specially Y'shtolla's 180º personality flip into CSI Miami Dave Carusso's pre title card one-liners. It's super cringe.

Realistically, probably Alphinaud, but big doubt.

Let's not forget that other than Ryne, none of the characters that accompanied us throughout Norvrandt were native to the place. Let's assume 7.0 takes us to explore the rest of Hingashi. Imagine how boring it'd be if we're stuck travelling with the exact same set of characters once again?

It's been over a decade now where we've travelled with the Scions. It's time for something new and fresh, I think. Killing a couple of them and having most of the rest quietly retire would help make room in what has become a very bloated cast.
My only issue with this is what is the point of killing them only to bring in new faces to do the same role? Wouldn't that be pretty pointless?

Who do I hope will die? Well, one should expect the bad buys to die, so this question is obviously only referring to companions and other acquaintances on the side of good, so of course I'm going to say NO ONE.

Eh, as much as I love Ali I wouldn't necessarily be against seeing her die as long as it was executed well and really did add to the story overall. I definitely wouldn't want it just done to fuel a new chapter for Alphi, and I wouldn't want it just as some random thing to prove there are "consequences." But I wouldn't be against it happening completely. It would absolutely crush me, sure, but that's what good storytelling can do.

My money's on red and blue alphinaud becoming the new cores for Zodiark and Hydaelyn, Urianger showing his true colors, and Y'shtola falling down stairs yet somehow surviving. Again.
