Where are your sources? Do you work for SE? Do you know people on the inside who can update you on what's happening? Do you know what's yet to be implemented that's preventing an on-time launch?

It's basic business time management. If you have good communication within your team and don't set unrealistic expectations you can know within the week of starting a project wether you will be able to meet a deadline or not unless something completely out of your control happens like a delivery truck derailing or a pandemic strucking the whole world.

I work deploying cloud builds for a large telecom in the US. We FREQUENTLY have builds get delayed due to issues, most of them hardware related. FedEx delays, Vendor delays, and thus, deadlines slip, impacting customer deployment dates. Some of these dates slip the day of. Maybe this is why I'm so numb to this, as its literally my job dealing with it.

And I've acknowledged that on my reason b), yet at least from what was said during the live letters it didn't seem to be the case.

Who do you get mad at when a company fails to deliver a product to you? I don’t think it’s realistic to get mad at yourself for something like that—vacation time being a factor or not. Someone is going to be the source of a person’s ire/upset/disappointment. And that’s fine—as long as they are being reasonable about it. I don’t see many in this thread being unreasonable when they post about why they are upset about this. Most are fairly calm; and most are just upset that the delay was announced so late.



I have to agree that yes, perhaps it could have been worded better. If we want to just chalk this up to a semantics argument, then fine. But your words were “just don’t be upset”. That’s still telling someone how to feel. Even with the addendum of “if things don’t go as planned”/your quip about “if people had considered things”. It is extremely easy for such a phrase to come off as condescending. There’s no real way to excuse that.

However, there has never been a precedent set in this game for delays when a hard date for a release has been set. EW’s delay seems especially harsh because we already know content was cut out of late ShB to make sure that development time could be fully dedicated to EW-related preparation and activities. And there was no talk about the mere possibility of there being further delays than what we already had (since expansions have been routinely released in late June/early July, and the developers were transparent that COVID cost them about two months of development time).



No. No one needs to tell anyone how to utilize their time off. That’s not anyone’s business but the person using the PTO. Not mine. Not yours. Not Yoshida’s or SE’s. Just their’s. There is no reason to tell anyone how to spend their time. With regards to anything, really. Not just vacation time.



Bullying? Death threats? No one is bullying the development team here. Criticizing them is not bullying. And death threats? As crazy as these forums get, most here would agree that sending death threats to a developer is uncalled for, and would rightfully shame the sender for it. I get that they’re a thing that happens, but that’s not what is happening here. Far from it.



This wasn’t about bugs, though—it was announced WHY the game was delayed, and it had nothing to do with programming bugs. Yoshida said that they wanted to fine-tune the lore. And then there was the server stability issues that came up during QA—and those have been known about for weeks.



This thread is feedback. If they took the time to read comments about how people wished they had more time to rearrange schedules, they can use that for future announcements should this happen again. The needless white-knighting is all irrelevant, though.

Actually, we do know what caused the delay. They posted about it on the Lodestone and talked about it at the start of the PLL.

I applaud the transparency. But I’m still within my right to criticize.

That does explain things and I stand corrected, but it's one thing to be upset and criticize, and another to make baseless assumptions and then criticize them for the things you just assumed

It's fine to be upset because of the delay, but it's an entirely different thing to say that the expansion delay was because SE was busy selling drugs to parrots and that they're braindead for doing so and not managing their time correctly

Shame on everyone who wants to attack the devs over a 2 week delay. You took paid time off for a videogame? C'mon dude, that time should be saved for something actually important, not to sit at home and play a videogame that you can play when you do actually have time off. Not saying you can't be upset and disappointment...I sure as heck am, but why sit here and get at Game Devs that want to make sure they release a quality product?

I don’t think your post here is white-knighting, tbh. I just think its nonsensical, and it sounds almost like you’re just looking to argue.

The people that are blindly defending SE/the developers from proper (and, quite frankly, deserved) criticism are white-knighting. Those typing out “you aren’t a game developer” or “the developers are human beings just like you and me” (because people are saying they aren’t, apparently???) are white-knighting. I’m sorry that you don’t realize that.

Based on the information we have, I think that the delay could have been prevented with better time management. The server stability issues have been a well-known issue that they have been performing maintenance on for a while now. The QA testing was delayed due to nitpicking lore—and ultimately, further instability was discovered during said testing. And then they delayed informing the playerbase about this by another week—and kind of put the damper on the PLL as a whole as a result. I think less time should have been taken on nitpicking minute details and more on the QA testing. Ensure your product can at least pass the basic quality standards before you start fine-tuning.

It’s not your right to dictate what is or isn’t important to some people. For some, this was an opportunity to sit at home and enjoy the expansion launch with friends in different countries/different time zones all at zero hour when it’s fresh and new. Part of the excitement of doing zero hour content is just doing it zero hour.

It’s a person’s prerogative to choose how they spend their time off that they earn. Not yours.

What people choose to use their PTO is, frankly, none of your business. What difference is there between using PTO for a long weekend vacation that thousands of people do annually and using that same time for an hyped video game launch? People take PTOs for all sort of things: concerts, sporting events or sitting at home all day in a hot bath. It's entirely their prerogative. What you deem "important" doesn't matter.
