I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone speak this badly of tokens. The heck happened since I quit lol?? Most people I've talked to loved them. But I guess I knew a bunch of people with enough gold to basically play the game free forever so??? Is that it???The cash shop can never ever get the same hate as wow shop...cause we don't sell tokens. if Yoshi-P can keep tokens from the cash shop then we should be fine. No dumb and toxic garbage like WoW. Tokens have utterly ruined that game. I do not think Yoshi will let that happen here. He has learned alot playing WoW; The good and the bad.
There are some things we can pick up from them that is good. The token along with Toxicness is not one of them.
I'd say Blizzard's other immensely questionable design and development choices had far more to do with ruining that game than any cash shop decision they've ever made

Not sure who you talked to but everyone myself included hate the wow token.I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone speak this badly of tokens. The heck happened since I quit lol?? Wild. The friends I talked to loved it because it meant they never had to actually spend a dime on the game anymore lmao
I was totally ambivalent toward it myself. I wasn't gonna buy any with cash or gold so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I recall hearing some complaints that it has become more difficult to passively farm gold since it was added, basically trying to nudge more players towards buying them.
I paid my sub + expac access through token from their inception in WoD to BfA. So, my initial relationship with them was pure love. What happened was two fold of: buying carries from selling tokens and using those clears for quick access to content. Made worse (from what I have observed through fascination) by locking progression behind time consuming grinds. Grinds easily bypassed by a paid carry. I can see where this love went to hell easily now.
Ahh yeah I can see that. I stopped playing anything close to seriously after Legion so I guess maybe it just wasn't as bad yet then? Lol or the game's other issues were just too glaring for me to notice at the time idk
Anyway my only problems with the cash shop here are that there are mounts that aren't account wide and outfits that aren't dyeable. And food that can be consumed. Not great imo

It started becoming hated because people realized the problem with the following:
Blizzard bans real money sales for carries and boosting, but not with gold
Wow token gives you gold, for real money, but the real money is going to blizzard, so boosting = okay if you're giving US the money
It's basically the definition of pay to win
People only seem to have realized this recently so wow tokens are hated by a good amount of people now
People to other F2P MMO's cash shop where they see cash shop ads every time they log in, pay directly in-game fight lootboxes within lootboxes, seasonal gacha, and buy upgrade materials/gear directly from the publisher: This is lit.
People to FF14 Mogstation's one-time purchase of cosmetic/skippers only (sometimes even account-wide), and they have to actively progress through unfriendly purchase process to get what they want outside of the game: Lose their mind.
WoW is straight up p2w now, but it's mostly a side effect of bad game design left unmended. There's no character progression outside of what new powercreep gear is in the latest patch. During the leadup to the latest expansion (Shadowlands), you could create a brand new character and get max level + some of the best gear in all of like 3-5 days of casual play. And that's a conservative estimate, a neckbeard could do it in one day.
You take a break from WoW for one patch, your character is worse than some noob who played for (literally) less than a week. They've done it like that for a while. It's a rat race for the cheese, gear on a stick. People played it anyway, maybe they enjoy the content and the journey regardless. Over the last few years the player culture seems to have caught up with it and the fact WoW tokens can be purchased with real money and sold ingame. An economy sort of developed where everyone now buys and sells carries. Because anyone can get the best gear, a noob can get max level in a few days and tag along to a raid, lots of groups will let him come if he pays. There is no other progression, he's already made it, he's right in the latest content getting the best gear drops.
Nothing is gated if you have the gold. And you can buy the gold with real money through the WoW token, it's perfectly allowed. So...
FFXIV is not immune to this but it has character progression outside of just "get catchup gear, then go get newest gear". It has MSQ, multiple jobs to level, side content and such. It also has RMT banned.
