Anyway, the mentor system is great but people have too high expectations of what mentors are there for. Basically queue fillers and "ask me so you don't have to ask google."
Try not to put them on a pedestal and you won't be disappointed with the results.

There it is again. Mentors who give advice are apparently spoiling fights and ruining the joy of exploration for new players. But when they don't tell mechanics before the pull, they are bad mentors.

    Which is it?

I turn on mentor icon for one from two reason:
    1. I genuinely want to help randos for short period of time regardless of results. It's one of those time I want to be selfless and can feel good about it. I will actually offer instead of just waiting to be asked.
    2. Lowering other players' expectation. Because yes, it's such a meme nowadays. It's easier to get around when people have low expectation from you: they barely recognize or even see you at all.

That does not mean I won't help outside situation [1]. I'm just not obliged to be that saint and help people. That's not how it works.

I'm worse at dungeons than I was a few years ago, I can't remember most early dungeon mechanics and they nerfed them anyway. Just heal through it.

Both, at the same time. I can only assume people want mentors to be perfect robots with every single fight ready to be explained at a moments notice.

People should see a mentor and be encouraged to ask. That's what the crown is for. Simple as that. It's literally why there are different types of crown... It's not some veteran reward.

You know what? I've gotta add..

Yeah, then the mentor system is basically worthless. It needs to be removed. There is no reason for there to be mentors, or mentor types, for that matter, if a battle mentor can just say "google it". The system is literally worthless at that point. If players can't be bothered to be an actual mentor after signing up to become one, then they should remove themself from the system, in my opinion. Like, seriously. It's absolutely ridiculous. We should be united in the removal of this system! It's a great idea on paper.. yeah.. in a perfect world it is, it really is. Let's all be real here though, this isn't some utopia. It's unnecessary, and doesn't work.

Novice Network is ridiculous, and I don't care if there are some "good mentors", there aren't enough to make the system worth it. If someone needs a chat channel for questions, they shouldn't need to be a mentor to use it and answer them, but of course we need the biased "moderation" of the novice network mentor kick wars, otherwise an actual novice channel wouldn't work. Yeah, yeah, I can already see the arguments. But wait.. if mentors just refer sprouts to google or YouTube, then why the heck do we even need a novice network for players to answer questions? Just get rid of it. All of it.

The search feature in the forums is there for a reason.

Now on topic, I joined the Novice Network on my server as a mentor not too long ago just to see if people's claims about NN in general were true and to see for myself how things are there, and to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. The mentors there know so much about the game and are so helpful. As for mentors in roulettes, it's pretty much what someone else said about throwing mentors in Ex trials with sprouts who aren't the least bit prepared for it. This last point has been discussed to death, so feel free to drop by one of the many threads discussing this.

As for mentors not explaining what went wrong when someone asks them and the mentor knows the answer, I'm yet to see this.

They don't ask. Usually it's "first time" or "I'm new" or just the game announcing there are first-timers.

Then a mentor can just not write up a 6 paragraph essay throughout the raid, about each and every mechanic then! It's great! Mentors can look the other way, since many don't want to feel obligated to give advice, and say "well, I had my crown on!". Hey, and if anyone is gonna say, "well, people call it a burger king crown!", yeah.. I wonder why? I really wonder why the crown gets memed on so much.

I have stated "I am new" before, but that isn't me inviting people to write me a novel. That's me stating, that if I mess up, I'm new and learning.
