I was healing some dungeons and had back to back tanks today that did not use their AOEs on mob sets. One was a PLD in Haukke (who didn't know how to stop Dark Mist) and the other was a GNB in Neverreap. In the latter, I joined a party in progress. I think the first healer gave up because when I joined, the machinist was talking about not using drill to avoid getting so much aggro. Even after I said something twice, the GNB just kept doing single target rotation and out of nowhere hit superbollide (made me blow a swiftcast for rez) and then tank limit for 4 little mobs near the end.

It's getting more and more frustrating to play. People are too quiet and don't ask questions or bother to stop and think about things like "why aren't all the mobs with me?"

To be fair, a lot of players don't want things explained to them and react very negatively if told without requesting. Additionally, having the crown displayed doesn't necessarily mean that person knows anything any better than anyone else there.

hell, you have quite a few people in this forum who get legitimately upset when someone is trying to help a clearly struggling player because 'unsolicited advice is bad' and 'you're forcing your playstyle on them'
so what are mentors supposed to do? damned if they do, damned if they don't

granted, I myself give out advice to players wherever I can because it's always nice to see someone else improve and I explain mechanics if people are struggling with them or ask for help with them, but I also don't care if I'll make some vet/mentor butthurt by spoiling 1 sprouts blind experience if 3-4 are asking for it, so

When someone asks for mechanics or hints it, I expect them to help. That's a good sign they're being asked for help.
For the one I referred to, the newbie said he didn't know the mechanics, that's hinting it.

For the fight after Omega Sigma V3, got the same newbie in the party, this time there was one battle mentor, I was rusty myself so I spoke up after they said they were new and said "refresh on mechanics please." Battle mentor ignored, party rushed and started the fight.

They're just getting the crown for bragging rights and mount, and that's why the requirements keep going up, because they don't even help.

AFTER that, Omega Sigma V4, there were no battle mentors, this time, someone not a mentor does helpfully explain mechanics. Kinda sad when the non-mentors help more than the useless mentors.

They shouldn't have the crown if they don't know the fights. Battle mentor is to mentor and help battles. If you grinded the 1500 commends, it's to be expected you went through enough battles to remember at least basic mechanics if not all.

If someone asks for the mechanics to be explained to them, they should have YouTubed a video guide. How does it make sense to waste both the mentor and the new persons time, when the new person can take the initiative and look up a guide. The new person is expecting the same result, but wants another person to do the leg work. At least with a video guide you can see the mechanics beyond script.

But yeah, easier to take our frustrations out on others rather than take ownership for our lazy, entitled ways

...That's the whole point of being a mentor! To explain things and help! It's not a mount and free bragging rights. Wtf.

At what point are people responsible for their own? The mentor is there to help. Not write out an entire guide for anyone. It’s people like you who expect too much from others. A mentor is not a slave to anyone. Who are you to demand anything

Being a battle mentor in no way means that person should know the names of every mechanic in the game. That is a ludicrous expectation from anyone. Getting mentor status means 3 things:
    1. You have been playing long enough to get 1500 comms, which, no matter how good you are, are hard to get. Most people don't comm. I know I don't unless you really blew away my expectations. So, very very rare.
    2. You have done all the content in the game at least once. You didn't have to live through it. You didn't have to not get hit at all. You just had to clear it.
    3. You have a healer, a tank, and a dps at 80.

It does not mean you have to be perfect. It does not mean you need to know every mechanic that exists. Maybe the mentors queued for mentor roulette. Which throws them in a random duty. Any random duty. Meaning you get can thrown into content that you haven't done in years, or stuff you haven't figured out the mechs to and got carried through from your spot on the floor the first time you beat it. Mentor =/= godtier player.

Also, you can't go off hints. A sprout could say, "hey, I don't know the mechs" just as a warning that they may die a lot. They might not even being asking for an explanation. And as other people have mentioned, a lot of sprouts get super angry and offended when you tell them mechanics because they wanted to go in blind or you're "ruining their first time".

Besides, if someone really wanted to know the mechanics going into a fight for the first time, they would look up a guide. Mentors are there to help, sure. But to expect a mentor to know every mechanic to hundreds of fights? Delusional.

You don't have to talk to the NPC to be a mentor after you get the commends if you don't want to be, you don't have to have the crown turned on.
If you're not going to help, or even reply in chat when asked with a simple no or 'I don't know.' Then you literally got the status just for show. That's the issue.

As a mentor you don’t need to know every mechanic to every fight. That’s an absurd amount of stuff to memorize. I walk into leveling dungeons I haven’t seen in months, maybe years, and don’t recall the fight til mechanics start happening.
Show me where agreeing to mentor status states i or any mentor must type up a detailed raid guide whenever confronted with a new person.
Again, I’ll reiterate, if you need a guide, if you desire a guide, look one up online. You’ll get more out of it. You also wont be wasting duty time which could be used for attempts at completing said duty. You wont be wasting the time of 7 other real life people, because you couldn’t take the initiative.
Get off your high horse. Step down off your hill of hate for mentors. Have some realistic expectations.
