I don't think the mechanic/concept itself is necessarily bad, it's more the usage of it and how often it gets used at times. Same thing with the NPC character battles. Unlike some people I don't hate the concept, but the execution of it and how often it's done at times leaves a lot to be desired.

    personally, its a game.

and I treat this little things as a game "how low can I get him before the mechanic triggers? how well can I do in a Kobyashi Maru?"

I know WoW doesnt do that, which I think generates a lot of these kinds of threads. Is it a horrible mechanic that will end MSQ progression? I didnt think so, but then, I dont have to feel like I can plow through everything in my path with impunity like a murder hobo with a mission. sometimes, there's gonna be a bigger fish. is it a cheap time waster with plot armor? maybe? but since its part of the story, and they had built him up as something a little different, I wasnt expecting a fair fight anyway just by going through the story.

bottom line is, if you dont like the story and what happens in it, such as these fights, thats fine, everyone is different. Doesnt make you bad, or anything, just like it doesnt make the game badly designed just because its there. It just is.

If you played WoW... then I am sure you can remember the times you beat the tar out of, and almost killed a big player only to have then up and escape through some cheesy mechanic, or better, just do some cheesy mechanic escape and leaves a minion behind for you to vent on. at least here you get to put some scratches in their plot armor before the big final event

oh right... yes, since there you arent the main player, just a grunt that they send out to do things while the plot armor npcs get all the glory.

here you get the end result satisfaction at the very least. sometimes quite a few times with Ascians since they just dont stay dead....

Cataclysm, Madness of Deathwing, where Thrall and the Dragon Aspects take the kill.

Wrath, Icecrown Citadel, fighting the Lich King, where the party gets outright killed and only Tirion's plot hax saves the day.

Any quest with Harrison Jones, where the quest outright states that he's escorting you, although to be fair those are parodies.

I'm sure there were more, but it's been years and I can't be bothered to do the research.

nah, it's people who wonder why the game lets you prolong a fight that you're supposed to lose (which you don't know at that point) for god knows how long instead of just adding a mechanic that forces you to lose after a minute or two
it's even more jarring when you're allowed to damage the enemy enough to make a win feasible only to be hit by an actual mechanic/ability that you can't dodge or heal through, making the whole fight/thing even worse when they could've added that way earlier rather than letting you struggle for 10+ minutes

I don't mind them it's just that it's too long of a fight for the same ending every single time. Spoilers ahead.

The entire thing with Thancred and Ranjit with their fight was great until you find out Thancred doesn't die and that's the problem SE has. I think they've become scared to kill off characters that have been in the story ever since Papalymo. Even if they do show a character dying, chances are they'll bring them back anyways.

Honestly when I get into those fights I just let the boss kill me the first time to find out. It's the new thing SE does like when they figure out a new battle mechanic and throw it into every god damned fight.

please dont blame SE for doing that. Unless you have not played other mmo's and watched them do the exact. same. thing. if you have never played any other mmo's then your innocence is charming. they figure out some mechanic is cool and suddenly 75% of every new mob uses it. why would SE be any different if its a decent mechanic. It an industry thing, besides, not like SE overuses it to any great extent.
