I like to feel pulled in to the world i play too sometimes so I get what you are saying. At first when you come from other games from say WoW where there is definitely a theme of sorts and all or at least most the armor fit within said theme. Everything is midevil steam punk high/dark fantasy esk.. you don’t suddenly see 21st centry school outfits.. it is some getting use to here.. Ffxiv seems more relaxed in regards to world building.

If you pay attention though the world of ffxiv is an amalgamation of other universes.. they have access to other dimensions, and worlds. The world also has magic of course that is capable of some serious stuff.. the way i look at it is these glams come from being exposed to other worlds.. In our own real world once someone creates something and the right person sees that creation mimicking starts to happen. All it takes is a glimpse of something that someone else wants that is determined enough to try and make their own. I imagine the same happens in this world.. atmosphere ffxiv is a result of exposure to other worlds and great magics. That is how I choose to look at it.

My glamors are a mix between old gear i just like and a few bits of out of world items. Tho due to my mindset it doesn’t actually break my immersion.. I am still the warrior of Eorzea that can see all and know all with penalty of brief migraines..

You could also just look at it as ffxiv just being pure dumb fun.. nothing stops you from being what you like.

That said i have nothing against a client side toggle of sorts. I think it might even help with the tech drought and people having to use older inferior tech due to high prices and total scarcity of gpus. I mean I probably wouldn’t use it.. but i have already had to reduce the complexity of others glams due to a previous gpu failure and having to revert to an older card. So it’s not like it wouldn’t have practical use in todays climate..

Agreed OP. The atmosphere of the game is ruined with the modern clothing. I'm not going to fault people for wearing what they like but it doesn't mesh with the rest of the game.

There's very few MMOs out there that stick with the initial scope of realism though. Everyone in ESO is riding flaming horses when back around launch a lion mount was something special.

FFXIV isn't Middle Earth or Tamriel or Medieval Europe. Some things that may seem to be immersion breaking at first actually fit within the setting. Including some of the goofier glam pieces like the pig costume, there's an NPC in Idyshire that actually wears that for example. The items we can get actually exist within the lore of the game. You can make an arguement for crossover items I guess but for the most part they don't tend to stand out too much anyway.

Glamour also exists in the lore, so while I can understand if a an outfit takes you out of it a bit, none of it's really lore breaking.

Eh, can't say that it bothers me. There are airships and other technology that is even better than real world modern technology. So a few modern style outfits isn't breaking any immersion for me.

Man there isn't any such thing anymore as pure fantasy, there are so many different kinds now There is the more traditional style that you would clearly prefer FF14 to be. Then there is gothic fantasy, steam punk fantasy, urban fantasy, even sci-fi fantasy. FF14 is not purely traditional fantasy. You don't get airships and magitech in traditional fantasy.

Even if this was true, it isn't, the other poster pointed out examples of how it isn't, but even if it was, it is irrelevant. But even if the technology was purely based on magic, that still takes it out of high fantasy simply because that technology exists. Some of Brandon Sanderson's worlds have technology that runs purely off of the magic of those worlds and no one would call those worlds high fantasy. Hell, Stormlight Archive has that kind of technology and some of their fashion styles do look more more modernistic.

Well he's specifically wearing that to hide his identity from those searching for him.

From a 1.0 player, the direction of how glam is going is only disappointing as the game did start more as a high fantasy (older times) theme. The cities now look out of place with all the new modern glams being added. Perhaps the cities could do with a bit more glam themselves to bring it all together.

Welcome to Final Fantasy! We have alot of 'anime' things going on and every single thing fits amazingly well.

Maybe you don't like it but nobody forces you to glam the basecap or ride the Regalia.

Live and let live is what I say. Immersion gets ruined by things that aren't part of the in-game lore, like...

Oh please, you know what I mean. *points*

Nice try but no, glams are perfect and while they're at it, they should add more modern ones :3

There's games with settings that don't have 'modern clothes', try those instead of wanting to kill my immersion, yeah?

    Thank you ^^

I kinda understand the OPs viewpoint - the game may not be pure fantasy or whatever label one cares to stick on, but there remains a stylistic vibe to even the stuff like Ironworks which some of the glam gear lacks; the best way to concisely describe it might be 'modern earth'. Something like the baseball cap for instance, just is too reminiscent of Earth (specifically American) design that it is kinda jarring in a way that swimsuits avoid for the most part. That said, Square chose to add the gear.
P.S the tags here listed are vindictive and frankly, I think less of the people responsible for slapping them on. It really isn't a good look, guys. Please can we be less immature/ready to call troll?
