SFW modding should be officially allowed.

The vanilla textures and character models look very dated in this game. Square Enix can learn from MapleStory 2 and host a first party mod archive that allows players to create mods that add hairstyles, body features, altered glamours to the game in a SFW way. This had great success in MapleStory 2 and although the rest of the game was crap this was one feature that I wish to see in FF14. There are a lot of SFW mods that make the game more beautiful like HD hairs, HD faces, HD eyes, modded glamours that might not be lore-compatible but still look awesome like Nike boots.

Since this game is highly focused on glamour as an endgame, Square Enix should exploit the massive amount of free labor in the playerbase. There are tons of enthusiastic modders who are willing to create glamours and HD uplifts for free. Officially hosting the SFW ones and advertising it as a selling point is basically a very cheap way for Square Enix to attract more players to the game.

No. everything is against TOS because free labour does not benefit the company. Think of the incompetent devs that would be 1upped by someone fixing/improving the game in their spare time! /sarcasm

If that were the case the mog station glamours would lose their appeal since you could get replicas or anything on the mod sites. I’m sure the revenue loss would be in the millions. So forget about it. Not saying it’s the best reason. But money is money.

I agree this game needs a graphics update. At least textures, at best if they’re not building a new MMO then the whole engine.

not unless they become available for console users.

which is probably the reason. Modding console games is a PAIN to do legitimately. And even then has restrictions. Like, Skyrim you cannot use custom assets. Must all be existing, in game assets.

Yeah, I agree. Only thing is the trademarked stuff, for example you mentioned Nike boots... that wouldn't be easy to do if there were official first-party support from SE. Not only because of the trademark display (Nike sure wouldn't care) but because of the value of displaying that trademark. SE's finance department simply won't give away millions of dollars worth of advertising for free.

Of course first-party support would also mean they have to make sure the submitted mods adhere to FF aesthetics, quality, etc., but a simple review process would filter out those that aren't up to par. I can say with surety that there are many, many mods out there that would instantly be accepted and supported. The artists that do some of these mods are absolutely amazing and hugely talented.

I haven't used any myself, yet (?), but simply browsing pictures of the drastic quality improvement on some of these (hair, body features, etc.) blows my mind, LOL. Good stuff.

the reason I doubt you would see any official support is because that gives free license to the mods already in use, I am pretty sure, by the erping community in FFXIV, and I seriously doubt SE would be open to that.

so likely be the same lack of any opinion on that or the bot programs running rampant, because then it becomes "official" and you cant close that door once they open it.

I think only adding glamour items and hairstyles themselves could be problematic:

    -Copyright
    -Existing items modded in
    -Unlockable hairstyles modded in
    -Dye variations

Some of the existing items require running a dungeon, trial or raid, getting an achievement, purchasing from the MogStation, completing a quest, crafting, and so on. Unlocking a hairstyle I think is either an item in game or MogStation. I think most of everything else can be fine. As for the textures of glamour and hairstyles, I think that would be possible w/o it being a back door for people to use it to mod in items and hairstyles they cannot otherwise use but exist already in game, but I'm no modder.

You don't temper with the original items when modding you know.... That's why it's only client side. It would be like if you pay entrance to see Mona Lisa, take a picture of it, edit it on photoshop, then publish it on internet.

I don't really know how Bethesda deal with their mods, but IF the devs decides to allow mods officially, perhaps it could take an example of two from Bethesda (not about paid mods though).

Maybe there's better examples, I dunno.
