But even so, something as simple as "Hide Headgear" still isn't a feature of the base game! Why not!?

It actually is, it's just difficult to find if you don't know where to look. It's on the "Character" screen. The one where you can manage your gear, see your beast tribe rep, see your class levels, etc. Under the character display window, iirc.

EDIT: I'll look for it in the morning but I know I've used it before because I like seeing my character's face.
