Who is your least favorite major character and why?

Eh, I guess I would say Gaius because he’s so damn boring and I don’t know why they had to bring him back. I didn’t care about him back in ARR either. It annoys me that his entire explanation for why he didn’t die in the Praetorium was basically just “Well, I was going to let myself die but then decided ‘Nah, not today’ and so I didn’t.” I still have no idea who those two people who hang around with him are either. As far as I can tell they don’t have either names or personalities. If they really had to have a Garlean for Estinien to hang around with, why couldn’t it have been Nero or something?

I used to despite Alisaie and Fordola. But they made her much more past that cold, chin up exterior with shadowbringers. Now, I look forward to seeing her. Fordola was also expanded greatly upon. It's nice to see how her character is progressing.

Cid is kinda dull imo, I don't really understand why so many like him.
I'd say that Minfillia gets too much shit but I do agree that there is a problem with show don't tell with her.
The game spent too much time telling us about how important she was instead of showing it, to some extent that makes sense since she wasn't a combatant and out in the field ( Not every character needs to be like that btw... Being a good fighter is not a requirement to be a good character ).
But like there's times where other characters are sent when she could've gone herself and made herself more useful in the eyes of the player.
Especially as a representative.

Hate is a very strong word, like with Minfillia for example I can agree that she wasn't very well-written and that her deeds weren't really portrayed which made her feel useless.
But there's a difference between that and HATING the character.
I can't really think of a character I legit '' hate ''.

Same goes for other characters too I can't think of one that is just so bad that I hate, and then I look at the extreme levels of hate Minfillia and Lyse take ( for many things that other characters are guilty off too ) and it always seems so petty to me.
Only character that got somewhat close to that at some point for me was Alphinaud when he was at his lowest emo phase with the whole Crystal Braves thing but now he's my bro.
But at one point I kinda just wanted to leave him behind.

I don't think there are any characters I outright dislike, honestly. Even Zenos I really like.

If I had to pick one it would be Lyse, not because I actively dislike her but because she hasn't been used in an interesting way in quite a while. Hopefully Endwalker she will have another chance to shine. Thancred can be rough for me too if only because he seems to get a personality reset each expansion.

I actually like Zenos as a villain too.
He's not very complex but at the same time we've already had more complex villains.
For just a big bad finale boss I don't really mind a more simplistic villain that you just reaaaally want to kill.

Just like how I don't think a character needs to be a combatant to be a good character I don't think a character needs to have some deep soap opera motivations either.
I think Zenos is really good for what he's supposed to be.

G'raha Tia.

He's afflicted by pretty much all the worst tropes that have come to infest many fantasy settings.

Not only is he unsettling to look at, by virtue of looking like this:



He inexplicably re-enters the story at a critical point and plays a major part in taking down not one but two major antagonists. Despite having far lesser reasoning to get involved compared to those who have more personal beef with the opponents in question.

It isn't enough that he escapes largely unscathed with minimal lasting consequences, either. He negatively impacts what are meant to be high stakes/serious moments through gushing over not only the player character but everybody else as well.

There's no option to decline what is an unwanted friendship/obsession in the eyes of many.

His source of power is extremely contrived. It isn't enough that he's a super special with the blood of Allag in his veins (despite not, y'know, actually being Allagan). We have to stomach a time travel plot to make him even more super powerful.

Graha and Zenos are tied to me. Graha because he relies on plot armor and plot holes to stay relevant and took screentime away from much more important characters. Zenos because he’s bland/boring, ugly, and like graha, also took screentime away from much more important characters.Alisaie i dont hate as much as them, but i just find her hot headed attitude far too annoying and her apparent crush is much too cringy for my tastes. Im hoping we get an option to tell her to stop in EW.

Beyond the two mentioned above, with both vying for top place (probably G'raha edging a bit ahead of Zenos as of now), Hilda; technically not "major" but she's one of the ones that come to mind. Just don't like half-breeds much in fantasy settings as a rule and she is no exception.

Cid is another I find rather uninteresting and downright irritating at times. Such a different reaction to the Cid characters from other FFs, where in 7 he was one of my faves.

Alisaie has gone down a few notches to just being occasionally irritating, whereas I am increasingly getting tired of hearing from and about her brother.

I agree with the comments re the WoL - the dialogue options don't really reflect how I like to play my characters and I don't find the character very compelling. Particularly after they found out the truth of their ancient soul... I know a character of mine would have much more to say and many more questions besides. Perhaps tempering is to blame, but who can say...

Oh great! I’m working through the MSQs for the first time and have been looking for an excuse to rant.

Look I’m only at patch 2.55 at the moment so not even into heavensward, but seriously, Alphinaud can be such a precocious little weasel. I want Alisaie to come back, I’m hoping she’ll kick his ass.

Also Papalymo needs to give Yda a break, she’s so pure and he is such a donkey!

I’m still reeling from Moenbryda’s ending. I was like, at last, an 8ft woman with a great axe, I love her! They should have take Urianger instead. :sob:

I should probably mention I’m enjoying all the characters even the ones that I dislike. Very well done character development is keeping me hooked even through all the end-of-ARR grind.

Lyse, her transformation from Yda to Lyse was literally without any character developement. They just needed a strong figure for the ala mhigo liberation front and basically made Yda/Lyse in two quests from a funny goofball into a omnipotent monk which uses limitbreak on every encounter in stormblood and rules over ala mhigo without having any experience at all.

Felt like they didn't know what to do with papalymo and yda so they killed one off and butchered the other one for their stupid writing. Let us be honest, stormblood was in general just boring bad writing.

If you do the Sorrows of Werylt side quests you'll be able to see the backstory for the characters who are accompanying Gaius and their reasoning. Although I personally don't care for either of them still, they become more tolerable.

As for a character that I intensely dislike, it'll have to be Lyse or Cirinia Mol from the Mol tribe. I don't like overly nice characters for the sake of being "cute" or "likeable", and Cirinia just annoyed me for the brief moments she showed up in the MSQ. Lyse was just unnecessary to begin with and revealing she wasn't Yda was such an eyeroll for me when I went through the story the first time and only for her to be mostly useless for SB with her childishness irritated me. Literally, I get that the writers was trying to make Lyse her own person and find herself... but it felt so rushed and awkward when the Resistance leader died and shoved her into the role when she had shown pretty much no competency aside from being "mad" because the empire is the big bad guys and she has to brute force her way through everything.

Alisae is a much more enjoyable character than Lyse by far has some personality similarities with Lyse... but its executed right so that she doesn't come across as annoying or obnoxious.

Finding out about Haurchefant's writing in the Japanese version of the game has kind of soured me on his character. I originally thought he was fine, even if the game constantly referencing his noble sacrifice, but not Ysayle's, started to get on my nerves before the whole localization thing (which, for the record, I think they made the right choice.....)

I also didn't think much of Hien, good or bad, my first time through, up until I hit that point in post-SB where you run into one of the people involved in making Yotsuyu's life hell and, it's been a while so I forget the exact conversation, he just kind of glosses over the fact? Asshole gets away with it, scot-free?? Don't get me wrong, Yotsuyu got what she deserved (orchestrated it herself, even), but the people are plenty guilty too, if you ask me...
