First we would need to define "success" in terms of healer design.

I'd say in this case, both an increase in the proportion of players that favour this specific role and the overall player satisfaction with the role.

    Popularity and Satisfaction?

I'm sure there's going to be a surge in healers next expansion, for good or ill. Recency bias will come into play as people try out the new job. I hope Square doesn't take that uptick in healers to necessarily mean they've "fixed" healers.

I will most definitely play Sage and most likely main it. It's the next manly looking healer if I can call it like that after SCH and most likely the class will be overpowered in a sense but not too broken. I think they would do that to incentivize more ppl to play Sage. Didn't something similar happen with dancer and bard, dancer ending up being stronger than bard in almost every aspect?

AST wasn't Overpowered when it came out. In fact it was the opposite. Healing wise it was the weakest in both potencies and MP economy. Now it was quickly buffed to the point it surpassed both SCH and WHM a few patches after 3.0. Not every new Job was OP at the start I'd say. But chances are Sage will definitely change the meta in someway.

Correct. Though it's not quite enough of a pattern to say for sure, I know a lot of people (myself included) who suspect that AST's garbage can-tier release prompted Square to err in the opposite direction for subsequent jobs. Pretty much everything after AST has leaned more toward overpowered on release since they were overly cautious with AST.
