''I have over 6000 commendations and nothing to show for it''
I don't think you should have anything to show for it.

I'm at over 5800 comms and I'd have to agree. The title just screams entitlement. I don't like to wear the mentor crown because I honestly side squint at people using it.
I'll join random roulettes with some new people and people with the name glamour and they won't say a damn thing to explain anything, so I make sure to ask if the new person wants any tips/heads ups. It's literally just a waste to have in the game, most likely outside of the JP servers, but it's really a waste personally.

I have over 10k duties completed. I do things through DF plenty. Heck, my static used to DF coil when we were down a person and get people T5/T9 clears.Ok so, imho, using the DF for your daily roulettes helps the community a lot more than having an orange parse. Commendations are Df exclusive rewards. Having a lot of them doesn't mean you're a good player, of course, but it means you use the DF quite often, helping the community as a whole with queue times etc...
And this is what you're supposed to be as a mentor. Someone who's there to help the community. The mentor roulette is the perfect example of this.
So yea, getting "arbitrary commendations" helps the community more than being a fflog god who never touch the DF.

I am one of the people who obtained the mentor status because they like the battle crown icon. However, this doesn't mean that I can't or don't mentor people who are asking for assistance. I was doing that already before I got the mentor role.To be totally honest, it baffles me that people would become mentors just for an insignificant icon. When I saw Zepla's video about this all those years ago, I never thought this was actually something happening--I thought it was just a joke. This said, sometimes I wonder if maybe people are not necessarily after the crown itself but rather because they somehow think being a mentor means that you're better at the game than everyone else, which is of course not true. In this case, I fear that no matter what the icon is changed to (even a simple M), it wouldn't solve the problem.
This case is ok since you actually help and don't just treat the crown as a piece of glamour and act in an awful manner that contributes to the already awful reputation of mentors.

The vast majority of Mentors go in with good intentions and do the job right, players simply remember the worst ones more.
This is like anything in life.
Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]
I'm at 5.3k comms, and I'm still toxic.
I do think they should add more achievements beyond 5k as there shouldn't be this attain-and-park mindset, but then again they had the last cheeve at 5k since 2.0.
Like I'm sure they will raise the mentor commendations requirement again, as they should.
That this was enough to ruin the reputation of all mentors and for it to become a consensus is both sad and terrifying.
