in some other fairly well known games I think they have given up enforcing any kind of naming policy. thats likely why people do this, they dont think the rules will be enforced to any meaningful degree.
which in some cases they are right, but not with names
They won't ever give you any specifics as they feel that most people are aware enough that if they are told what rule they broke, that they can figure out what not to do to avoid it in the future.
They don't want players who get put in gaol to go harass those that reported them.
Here's how you avoid bans in the future:
Don't be rude to people.
Stop and think about what you're naming things to make sure you aren't knowingly choosing a name that is against the rules.
I would have been happy to change the names to everything and receive a 3 day penalty at max. My point is 20 days, for a first time offense is extreme. I was never warned about my behavior, and didn't think "Cosby Klan". I was never jailed before this encounter, never told by other players to change the name, or asked by them because they were offended, just mass reported and given this penalty. I would have been happy to change my behavior and adapt. I was never told to. Instead I was penalized harshly
One shouldn't have to be warned about behavior. One should know to not be rude to people no matter what.I would have been happy to change the names to everything and receive a 3 day penalty at max. My point is 20 days, for a first time offense is extreme. I was never warned about my behavior, and didn't think "Cosby Klan". I was never jailed before this encounter, never told by other players to change the name, or asked by them because they were offended, just mass reported and given this penalty. And maybe they were so offended by your FC name that if they asked you they would have been rude to you and gotten a strike for that? So they just reported you to the GM's and let them sort it out. And that's usually the best policy when you come across a rule violation on the internet whether it be on a forum or in game: report and let the moderators decide if it's against the rules or not and what the punishment should be if it is a rule violation.
I would have been happy to change my behavior had I been told to sooner instead of just been given a 20 day ban for my first offense. I have 0 issues with being punished, I know I did wrong. My issue is the punishment severity given context to the situation.
Telling people to learn the game isn't rude. And again. My issue isn't with being punished. My issue is the severity of the punishment. I would have been fine with a 3-5 day ban or something along those lines.
they can give whatever punishment they deem necessary "first" offense or otherwise.
That's unfortunately not how rulebreaking works here. Your personal lament being not unique but unlikely to change how it's handled.
If you do things like making your FC name something mildly offensive (was it really in any kind of good taste?) and possibly "yelling" at people all at the same time.. this is what happens.
It sucks for you, but arguing here, or with the GM's is unlikely to change anything.
Rude is subjective. If people reported you and it stuck as a strike.. it must have "seemed" rude (honestly we don't know if this was the case so this is still mainly theoretical), by all means log your complaint of the punishment being too harsh for a first infraction but as I said before.. probably isn't going to change anything.
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?
I do agree that this punishment is kinda harsh on a first offense. Let's be honest new players don't know that the rules are so striktly enforced in FFXIV because other games have rules too but GMs there couldn't care less about that and let the offender get away with it. It does not excuse him but 20 days is a bit excessive.
And my point about all of this is I know I made mistakes. My punishment is harsh. I just want a reasonable punishment to fit the crime. Not to be excessively suspended for something this minor when Ive seen people do much worse.
