I mean, we got GNB. Then there was Eden and the VIII over world music and Squall's set has been in the game for ages. Maybe more gear from the rest of the cast? An Edea trial?

You know what we really need?
    An Angelo dog cannon!! :O
I think it was? At least on the VIII references. They took the music, took Eden and the theme of memories, but it had very little to do with VIII overall. No armors, no bosses, no characters, no story snippets (unless I'm forgetting something?).

I very much like GNB, but have mixed feelings about the animations. Many of the moves remind me more of something out of XIII than VIII.

And whoever thought a pig golem named Angelo could ever replace a dog cannon must've been drunk.

Eden had a lot to do with VIII if you accept anything past superficial skins.

For starters, Void Walker is based on the Elvoret/Elnoyle boss from VIII, and the way Gaia is held on it's chest is similar to the Adel/Rinoa fight.
The entire plot of Gaia having lost her memories, and in the final battle with her memories being erased, is taken straight out of GF memory issues, and Squall/Rinoa losing each other in Time Compression.
Add to that the point of ''creating summons from our memory", echoing the fact that GF reside within your mind, in place of your memories. Your memories of the primals you create is even distorted, showing that your memories are not flawless, exact retellings of what actually happened, they degrade over time.
Gaia being possessed by 'Artemis', one of the roots/inspirations for Ultimecia. (she's flat out called Artemisia in some localisations)
Artemis being her long lost love and vowing to get her back whatever it takes. The whole thing is Squall/Rinoa flipped on it's head. (and maybe even a subtle nod to the Ultimecia=Rinoa fan theory)
E11 is Ryne's Griever, it's a combination of the things she fears the most and believes have power over her, just like Ultimecia conjuring Griever from Squall's mind, as the most powerful beast he could imagine and thus strike fear into him. The battle theme should have been enough of a hint.
E12's model uses the skeleton of Ultimecia's final form, complete with the same animations (while she tries to erase Gaia's memories). It's basically a redesign of Ultimecia, based on a statue of Artemis*
E12S has Gaia 'ascend' into a being with mastery over time itself, complete with some of Ultimecia's moves, and The Extreme as the battle theme.

I don't. At least comparatively speaking.

I liked Eden as a whole, but I reeeally have to squint hard to see some of the similiarities you've brought up, even though in the end I mostly agree with your assessment.

As much as people (me included) complain that crossovers are usually too lazy, and just dropped in the world with very little rhyme or reason, in this case I think they went a bit too far in the other direction. Its probably my favorite raid series thus far, but (other than the music and E1) it didn't really stir any sort of nostalgia for VIII in me. The most VIII vibe I got really, is sitting in the desert, Blue Fields theme blasting and Eden sitting in the background. Reminded me of ye old pre-rendered backgrounds.

TL;DR I've been probably brainwashed and trained by the developers to like and accept the in my face fanservice provided by other crossovers, and thus was underwhelmed by what is provided by Eden from VIII. My immersion is dead and it was murdered.
