I'll bite in answer. If we look at Melee, you'll see:
Ninja - Bite and run, because you need try to use Hide+TA for every possible burst
Dragoon - dont have "burst" damage, but have really high pressure, so you always need harass people with damage. by some distance, because PT is good at distance
Sam - build gauge and unleah it every 30 sec
Monk - realy high burst every 15s, and VERY high every 30s.
So if you try play on Monk as Dragoon, you gonna fail every game.
Tanks: we have or mitigation, or healing on party, or damage. Or trash (hello drk). If you play on War as Pld, you gonna fail
Healers : not gonna say much, whm supremacy
RDD : Mch can be in Australia, while Brd and Dnc need be close to enemy.
Casters: Well, 3 VERY different classes with their unique playstyle.
So no, not similar at all. Only role skills
