A lot of people have said they'd be fine with a leasing system if it meant the demo timer was scrapped.

I can see why SE does not embrace this.

"Hey Yoshi, I'd like to stop sending you cash for my house, and start sending gil!"

SE is a business first. The housing model as is keeps subscriptions rolling. I don't think we should ask SE to give up revenue in this way any more than we can ask SE to add 100 wards and not pass the cost along to us.
