I noticed this too when seeing someone in the character creator, and it's strange when you consider the elezen and midlander sideburns go all the way up to the hairline. Though I do question: are those supposed to be actual sideburns, or are they face paint? I can't tell based off the picture if hair actually sticks out from the face at all.

Nah, it's hair. Changes color with hair color and showed strains with different colors. I think they just made it too short not realizing it would show like this with certain hairstyles.

The fact that face option 1 has no facial hair at all is VERY annoying. I dont know what the devs think when they make options for the character creation but its getting pathetic at this point.

Also there is a problem with Face 4 sideburns not matching up to certain hairstyles leaving an odd looking gap.

Given how small they are, I'm not certain that they're intended to connect. It's not the full sideburns, just a deliberate patch, similar to the beard not being a full beard.

I agree the beard designs are strange and not at all what I expected (and I'm rather glad I didn't want one on my character anyway) but given the route they've taken, the isolated patches seem to fit with the rest of it.

(Headcanon: Viera can't actually grow facial hair so it's all fake beards and painted sideburns to signal to other races that they're definitely not women.)

Is the "painted feathers" design I've seen on some characters supposed to be sideburns as well? It looks like it's sort of trying to be, but definitely isn't hair even though it matches the colour.

Makeup was more important haha tbh face 1 is the less doll like and masculine. The salty face makes it more interesting to for a more agressive look but the options are more turned for another sweet dude look.

People complaining about the various Male Viera aesthetics need to realize you are screaming into the wind. This is locked. They are now optimizing the game. They aren't going to rework race designs and extras now.
