People even had their own private servers where they played the vanilla game. Blizzard finally caved and released Classic because there was so much demand from the community.
Not so, for FFXIV. The game didn't happen to veer off from its roots accidentally, it literally had to be demolished and remade because the original was so bad. And for the most part, I don't really think there are many people who truly want to see it return to those days. After all, if 1.0 were actually any good, we'd still be playing that and ARR would have never come out.
I don't know what classes were like in 1.0, but I do remember when ARR first came out you had abilities that you could learn on one class and use on another class. For example, I think Lancer could use Protect if you leveled Conjurer enough, and I seem to recall grabbing Thunder from Thaumaturge so my Arcanist had an extra DoT spell. I really liked the potential of that system, but it never really went anywhere as you lost almost all cross-class ability once you graduated to your Job at level 30. I think that's why we have this awkward system of "Job Stones," and why Arcanist splits into two separate Jobs.
And then there was the huge downside, which was you actually had to level another class to 15 to even unlock your Job. If you wanted to unlock Summoner for your Arcanist, you actually had to arbitrarily level Thaumaturge. Or if you wanted White Mage, you had to level Arcanist. And there weren't universal Role actions in those days either -- essentials like Raise or Swiftcast were locked behind other classes. Swiftcast in particular was such a miserable grind for me, I can't stand playing THM...
