Wow almost 400 posts. Never knew people were that excited to see Asmongold play the game.
No, me jumping on the bandwagon as you like to call it does not make his point mine. I jumped on the post because I have vehement disapproval with someone chalking everything up to being "y'all just jealous". It's a childish outlook to have, as I feel I have made abundantly clear. I don't condone the tone of the poster, and nor do I condone the logic of chalking everything up to being jealous. The person being called jealous more or less just came here to announce that Asmon is "nothing special." That was gaslighting, and he got jumped on for it. The problem is that you hitched yourself to his wagon and started attacking the people who jumped on him, so his point by proxy became yours.
Regardless, there's nothing wrong with threads like this, and Asmons "wishes" are just standard celebrity faux modesty. Publicity is his careers lifeblood, and he's probably going to be trying this game on stream; because, you know, he OBVIOUSLY wants to keep this low key and private. /s
The false modesty just keeps him from looking like a douche, and while I'm sure he doesn't want to be harassed in game I doubt he minds his fans talking about him. So, let them make a thread and have their fun, and don't worry; Asmon will get to "just try the game."
Congratulations for stating the obvious with this sentence, really, well done.
Or he just doesn't want people to blow the whole thing out of proportion, but who knows. 'I think, you think'. Afterall. I'm not sure I'm willing to equate "Please just try to let me enjoy and play the game without turning it into drama or anything else unpleasant" as being false modesty.

Like it or not, what you hitch your argument to does affect how your point will be received. "You're just jealous" is a perfectly reasonable way to brush off someone who is gaslighting; there's no reason to expect a more nuanced response than that. The optics of you coming to his defense there aligns you with his position, even if it's not what you intended. Also, nothing about threads like this is blowing anything out of proportion, so what are you worried about? He's trying the game and some fans of his are excited about it. If this threads purpose was to imply he was abandoning WoW and dedicating his channel to FFXIV I'd see your point, but that's not the case.
He'll play, and if we're being honest he probably won't like it much. This game has no PvP to speak of and doesn't give the best first impression gameplay-wise.
That sounds like he's asking his people and ours to not start any kind of class warfare over this; he's not saying "Please don't make any threads welcoming me to the game.""Please just try to let me enjoy and play the game without turning it into drama or anything else unpleasant" as being false modesty.

Tbh, I think most of his fans are excited about it because of the upcoming memes and because they want to hear him trash the game and partake in it themselves.
I actually do like Asmongold's Streams, but I am also not blind and I read his chat and know how it works and so does he which is why he has said that he knows it's going to happen and why he's so defensive about it.
I really wish he'd play the game off-stream, because I really don't think it's actually possible for him to give the game a genuine try while streaming.
He's going to ruin the entire experience and at that point I honestly don't see the point other than to just create drama content for the views.

Honestly never heard of the guy before MPK started mentioning him, and then youtube's algorithm suggested his reaction to the Endwalker trailer. Aside from him not knowing what weeb means, his takes were pretty mild overall but I don't know if XIV would appeal to him aside from certain job aesthetics. HW story might interest him but I can't see him making it past ARR with all its world-building frontloaded as much as it is. Maybe someone who watches his content can tell me if he even enjoys or interacts with WoW's story, if so then he might have the patience to go through the slowest part of the story. His chat though, good lord almighty, I haven't seen such a gathering of what appears to be 15 year-old edgelords in one place since high school.
No, it's a very poor way to chalk it up. You can narrow it down to the individual being apathetic towards his status. Seemed blatantly obvious, if you ask me. As I said, read my previous post. I disapproved of both sides, for a mix of reasons. No need to 'pick my battles' better because someone on the OF is under some serious misapprehension that because I opposed a particular point, it can thus only mean that I'm defending the person they were making the point or claim towards. No, just no.Like it or not, what you hitch your argument to does affect how your point will be received. My concerns are founded on the simple fact that some people seem to be under the impression that him trying the game constitutes him making a definitive move to the game. It sets out unrealistic, or unfounded expectations or hopes, and like I said, it's also pretty controversial

Yeah Asmongold himself isn't the problem, it's his fanbase.Honestly never heard of the guy before MPK started mentioning him, and then youtube's algorithm suggested his reaction to the Endwalker trailer. Or at least a very loud part of his fanbase.
I actually do like that he calls them out on shit and isn't afraid to speak his mind even when it's really unpopular with his own audience.
Edit: In regards to the story part, no.
I mean I guess he cares on a pretty surface level and minor level in the sense that he pays attention to what's happening and has opinions on it, but he's not like super invested in the story or so it seems at least.
These are all fair points, and I think some people may be conflating his wishes here.Tbh, I think most of his fans are excited about it because of the upcoming memes and because they want to hear him trash the game and partake in it themselves.

It's not that he wants the whole world to not mention what he's doing; he just wants his viewers to shut up during the stream and let him attempt to enjoy the game. The people getting all worked up about welcome threads because "OMG ASMON SAID TO BE QUIET AND LET HIM PLAY!" are likely missing the point.
It sounds like at least his intention is to not unfairly crap on the game, which is a good thing. Even if most of his audience hates it, though, it's a big audience. Some of them might see something they like.
This wasn't some man on the street interview where someone waved him down and asked him how he felt about Asmon; he's the one who jumped into this thread just to say 'this topic isn't important, I don't care.' Once he made the decision to interject himself he can't claim apathy. He cared enough to do it, and he didn't give ANY explanation why, so people might assume jealousy was the motivation. That's his fault.

Pretty much, his take on it basically seems to be that he loves half of it and hates or isn't into the other half. These are all fair points, and I think some people may be conflating his wishes here.

Which I mean is fair enough, it's not as if I like all content in games I play.
I'd even say that when it comes to games from Western studios I dislike most of it on a visual level.
To the point that I've essentially lost interest in most games altogether, it's not like I don't get it.
I mean watch his reaction to the Endwalker trailer and Reaper reveal, I don't get the impression at all that he's actively looking for things to complain about he really seems to just be giving his honest reactions.
And one thing I do like about him too is that he doesn't come across as a judgemental asshole about it, the way that someone phrases or says it can make a big difference.
When MikePreachWoW for example went on his rant about it after he went through raid fights he just came across like he had this attitude of '' ugh, you guys are disgusting ''.
Like his tone made him sound as if he was talking down to people.
I don't really get that impression from Asmongold, his tone surrounding it doesn't come across like he genuinely looks down on you for liking content that doesn't appeal to him.
It makes his takes more easy to listen to and accept imo, I only really get super annoyed by it when people are being or come across as really judgemental about what other people enjoy.
Normally I would say "Yeah that's cool I guess. idk who that is, who cares?' but we appear to have 300+ comments about who do care.
Community is what you make of it. One popular but seemingly problematic youtuber will not make or break the game or the community. There are plenty of flavors of toxic in both communities; lets not pretend one is somehow better.
I think you all need to take a breath and remember that this whole wow refugee panic is mostly a western phenomenon. The Japanese company that makes the game that is based in Japan and markets initially and primarily in Japan where World of Warcraft, while present, was never particularly popular is not likely to have a big impact if any to them and as such, they are happy for the free marketing material but also do not really care either.
