Aesthetics. Scouting gear for the most part varies between light armor and tighter clothing while Aiming gear tends to have more flowing clothing and long jackets.

And on the plus side, NIN, DNC, BRD and MCH would also benefit cosmetically from a slightly broader glam range.
Not really. The glam variety might increase but the glam suitability for each job would drastically decrease.

Taking in consideration that the Scouting set is almost always uses the same model of Striking in a different color, and sometimes Aiming, I can't see that argument holding up. At best, one could think that they should be merged with Striking, for aesthetic reasons, but then there's the different stat. The only times Ninjas actually get gear modeled after their "suitability" is when they get Artifact gear.

I'll go one better. For the Eden Gate raid series, Ninja shared its set design with Casters while Striking and Healing were identical. The dev team doesn't give a hoot about aesthetic consistency.

Ninja should be converted back into a STR job and paired off with the Striking set. If they don't want to do back to back Maiming DPS, move Samurai over. Either way, it's ridiculous how melee players can't gear within their own role the way every other role can.

The theme of the Edengate/Edengrace gear was "angelic" which doesn't really suit casters nor ninjas. Also they design gear sets to share components and then distribute those components among the gear sets. Look at all of the 5.X Tomestone/Raid Scouting gear:
    • Deepshadow - Head shared with Healers/Casters, Unique model body that is a lighter variation of Striking, Feet, Legs and Hands shared with Striking
    • Edengate/grace - White version of the Casting gear
    • Crystarium - Unique Head, Hands shared with Striking/Aiming, Body, Legs and Feet shared with Aiming
    • Edencall/choir - Head shared with Striking (with an eye-patch over Healing), Body shared with Maiming, Hands shared with Striking and Maiming, Legs shared with Fending and Maiming, Feet shared with Striking.
    • Cryptlurker - Head shared with Striking and Casting, Body, Legs and feet shared with Striking and Aiming, Hands shared with Striking
    • Edenmete/morn - Shared with Striking.

Ninja actually gains a lot out of the devs ability to recombine sets that would be lost by just making them wear Aiming sets.

Please don't. I love that I can half-gear both NIN and MCH at the same time. I generally only play one job per role and I'm sure a lot are the same.

Perhaps it would be possible to merge more gear types together, but have it change appearance depending on the job, similar to how the same piece of gear can look different on each gender. That way a Dex top could be equipped on both NIN and DNC, but would have a much different appearance on each job.

They could even look at expanding the system used for pre-order earrings, where they change main/secondary stats depending on the job that equips them, allowing jobs with different main stats to equip them same item. It would save a lot of armory space.
