They wanted to give the sword weight. Holding swords as large as DRK's in real life is nearly impossible without like, mechanical arm aid due to physics and leverage. The whole theme of the job is struggle for what's right and what you love, even against the powers that be and make laws.

The default stance for the sword reflects the struggle portion of the class fantasy. It's not really for realism at all. If it were, they'd give DRK more moves involving stabbing, as well as moves involving moving a hand to the part of the blade just above the hilt for more control/leverage.

So it looking painful is on point.

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore

Uhh.. I don't know about that.. Have you seen DRK's 'Victory' emote? Besides it's kind of a thing in like eastern games or anime for swords to be gigantic.

Wellll, considering the DRK /victory emote is literally Cloud's victory pose from FFVII, and the fact he wields swords like the infamous Buster Sword that should be outright impossible to pick up let alone swing around like a baseball bat, I think that is fully justified.

Having said that, PLD's original relic weapon Curtana is canonically made from a solid piece of marble (according to the artist who designed it in the art book), and yet PLDs like my character seem to have no problem or ill-effects of swinging it around, I'd say it's one of those "willing suspension of disbelief" times again. Don't think about it too much.
