FF14 has a good story but it's not as good as the hype makes it out to be so in the end I was disappointed. I can give you 50 games that had a better story than FF14.

The first issue is that there is too much filler in the story that adds next to nothing to the lore or the story. Having to play hide and seek with children is not interesting. Having to harvest vegetables as the freaking Warrior of Light is stupid. The game suffers from being an MMO by having to give you way too much filler.

The second issue is that the game can't be as immersive as modern story-driven games. The Last of Us 2 is capable of making you feel sad, angry, and horrified because the game is designed in a very immersive manner. FF14 makes you read the dialogues which isn't as immersive as modern story games.

The third issue is that even in world-ending, cataclysmic events, there is no sense of urgency. This is partially because FF14 isn't as immersive as single player games. It's also because there are way too many Mary Sue moments in the game where you expect someone to die but they miraculously survive. After a few Mary Sue moments you just don't expect anyone to die anymore. Because of that there is not much tension to be felt in the story.

I'm not saying the story is bad, but it's definitely not one of the best stories in a video game nor is it really even one of the better stories among the Final Fantasy franchise. I enjoyed FF14 and it does have a better story than WoW but I don't think it matches up to actual single player games at all. So I really don't get the hype and IMO people have just not played enough thought-provoking story games outside of FF14. Saying it has one of the best stories in video gaming history is an exaggeration at best.
Better than the competition, at least!

The fact your comparing TLOU2 to FFXIV is a major reveal to how you think. FFXIV is fine how it is. TLOU2 is a literal dumpster fire because it force fed political bias and social justice crap down fans throats. When will you people realize that the fans of FFXIV DO NOT play this game to be bombarded by politics and social justice! WE PLAY IT FOR FUN! We play it to escape the modern world which is currently a crap fest because of these very subjects! We come to Eorzea to escape Earth's problems. And the last thing we want is people comparing our escapism paradise to a crap game like TLOU2. We want FFXIV to remain politics free unless its part of our story worlds narrative. And if your so disappointed in FFXIV then don't play it.

The Azim Steppe bit of Stormblood was interesting as well. But I feel like it was specifically on Shadowbringers that they made the whole cast shine, gave Eorzea a better world-build and a bigger purpose to the Scion's mission.

But many people act like "FFXIV STORY IS AMAZING!!" without really being honest that a great deal of the story is not the ultimate quality. I have been told that the race's lore of FFXIV is "amazing, very elaborated" when... yeah, not, not really? Specially if you compare with any other RPG in which your race is relevant. People enjoy ShB (which is GOOD, yes), and forget about the meh parts. I get that this game tries to give more explanations for the things in their world than most, but that doesn't make it high-quality.
And perhaps for them it's has amazing story with the warts and all.

But in reality the greatest/amazing story does not exist. it is how each individual interprets about what story is good or bad.

And people will feel like being attack when people are criticizing something they love and feel like they need to defend that, and that is just normal

lmfao your standard of good story is Last of US 2?!?!? Come on then you talk about Mary Sue? Did you miss the indestructible tank in Last of US 2? Let me guess you thought Rey in Star Wars was really deep character design also?

Sticking purely to the MSQ, there were lots of bits that were too long on the tooth and yawn worthy, but then there were parts that were super sad and I was invested in.

As this is a newer account, I had bought a Stormblood skip so I could do the current expansion, as I had remembered Heavensward and while I loved it, was like 'phew, that was huge'

I am glad I didn't just start again with the Shadowbringers intro quest, and went back and did via New mode plus the Stormblood story as I actually liked it the most, and it had a looooot of information, or faces that would have made no sense without context before.

Where am I going with this? No where succinctly, but I think as an overall arching story, it's been quite satisfactory and I have enjoyed it.

That's the thing though. I really love Dragon Age, but there are plot holes and stuff in the story that aren't very convincing. I love Harry Potter, but Potter is annoying and the ending is a lackluster without proper world building.

My point is: I don't understand why people have to do this 80 or 8 thing. You can still love things while having an eye to tell the low points or cons of it. I know because I'm always telling how the story is great to my friends, and they start playing and get stuck at a lot of points in ARR that's just filler or plain bad-writing and I can't really blame them. It has great moments, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be honest about the entirety of it.

Of course, I have no power in how people should act... I can still have an opinion on the attitude though.

    I haven't played TLOU2 because I don't enjoy zombie-themed worlds.

But this argument makes no sense. Eorzea has a bunch of problems inspired by real-world problems. A lot of fantastic games, books, etc are partly great because they use their narrative to question OUR society. These things are not pulled out of thin air. You might disagree with them, but the problem then is because you don't agree with it, not because there are politics involved. Politics is everywhere, you live in a society, and you can't really skip or ignore it.

I hope that the entertainment world do not start catering to this audience that is so sensitive that every time something makes them think twice, they feel attacked. If you feel like you can't relax because something is taking a look at our society, that's on you.
