which is perfectly fineYes, 6'1" is a great height in real life, but 6'1" is not tall in this game.
We have to realize that real-life height doesn't equate to in-game height.
Male Midlanders can go up to 5'11", and while that's a good height in real life, it's short in this game. There are many other races that go well over 6'1", such as Roegadyn, male Au Ra, Hrothgar, and Elezen. Even the tallest Midlander would seem short by comparison. So while a 6'1" male Viera would sound dreamy in real life, he would be much shorter by this game's standards.
Look at this chart.
If max height male Viera turn out to be the same size as male Midlander or similar, they wouldn't count as a tall race. They would be another short male race.
"Stop right there, criminal scum! Nobody breaks the terms of service on my watch! I'm reporting your illegal mods, now enjoy your time in gm jail."
Right, and this is the area of contention:
Some of us, like myself, have been wanting to play a tall male character with a "pretty boy, anime protagonist" look. Most tall male options right now are very far from that. Male Viera presents an opportunity for us who want that tall, pretty male race that isn't Elezen.
There's nothing innately wrong with short male races. I think male Midlanders and male Miqo'te are great in their own way.
But why force male Viera to be so short when they can be proportional to the females? The two shortest male races (after Lalafell) are already immensely popular.
If male Viera turn out to be proportional to the females, then they would be between male Highlander and male Elezen in terms of height. I predict this because female Viera height is between female highlander and female Elezen.
As you can see, that's not crazy tall. They wouldn't be anywhere as big as male Roegadyn or male Au Ra, meaning that a minimum height male Viera could be capable of being a good short height too for those wanting to play a shorter male. Of course you'd still be taller than a male Midlander and Miqo'te, but that's to be expected because you're playing Viera.
What made female Viera a great addition to the races is that they provided players another tall girl option. So for people who wanted a tall female character but didn't like the female Elezen or Roegadyn proportions/features, female Viera is another option. And yeah, female Viera didn't turn out to be as popular as female Miqo'te or female Au Ra (especially on Japanese servers), but they definitely helped diversify the population. Now we see taller girls running around to balance out the huge female Miqo'te and female Au Ra population.
And just like how Miqo'te and Au Ra are the most popular races for females, Midlander and Miqo'te are the most popular for males (the two shortest males after Lalafell).
People make the argument that making male Viera short would be new and interesting, but I disagree.
I feel that making male Viera short would simply be a repeat of what happened to female Au Ra.
It would be more interesting and creative to have a tall male handsome race, because right now all we have is Elezen. All the other tall male races are bulky, bestial, or covered with scales and horns.
I understand that a lot of players like playing short races. That's why half of the playerbase either plays female Miqo'te, female Au Ra, male Miqo'te, or Male Midlander. Check the census for each server. It's true.
But not all of us want to play short. Some of us want to play tall characters (and tall pretty characters at that). So when a potentially tall race is revealed, it's exciting.
That's why all those threads that popped up after female Viera were released asking for them to be made shorter were frustrating. It's like "we finally got a beautiful and elegant tall girl race" and now people want to take it and make it short because they want Miqo'te with bunny ears. And that's what I feel is happening to male Viera.
Granted, male Viera have never been revealed until now, but looking at past evidence; like Yoshi's comment about male Viera being similar in build to male Elezen, and the concept art, it's clear that male Viera were designed to be on the taller side. So when people say, "Male Viera should be short and if you don't want them to be short you're insecure, etc" it feels extremely unfair.
Like I said, I just wanna be able to play a handsome tall male race that isn't Elezen. And I'm sure a lot of others feel that way too.
