They have never seemed to have a problem with this. Every single top piece with a sash or cape-ish thing just clips your tail. Most gear doesn't have rhyme or reason for a tail hole, and it just pokes through.

I think the thing is that the ears don't just "clip through" - they're slightly disconnected from the head with the gap normally covered by the hair, so hats need to line up with the bottom edge of the ears to look right.

It's possible they just want to skip out on whatever effort is needed to get that right.

Yeah - there were some screenshots posted on a thread a while ago of Miqo'te characters without a hairstyle equipped. You can see it's just the floating inner ear that's part of the base model, with the fur and most of the actual ear shape being part of the hairstyle (which adds up with some styles putting highlights or dark tips on the ears).

Even if the ears were fully attached to the head, adapting a bald style for them would be odd. Do you leave fur on the ears? Is it going to look dreadful on them either way?
