The first point is the player is making free trial accounts, meaning it's impossible to ban them without IP banning (which a vpn would just bypass anyways) or blacklisting as they can just make more accounts with more alts.

The second point is saying an entire server should just not use the novice chat because of one guy is insane. That's not even considering the fact it's a NOVICE NETWORK, where new players are, and if new players are seeing that behavior repeatedly without anything being done to properly stop it by Square, chances are they're going to go somewhere else, because they've gotten their first impression.

You know. This is just casual "We don't actually care just don't swear lol" that I always felt was happening in the background.

Better that the people we pay a monthly subscription work out a way to clean up their product. Hire a few more staff members maybe.

I am inclined to agree that the NN is probably more of a detriment to new players rather than a benefit.

How I've seen Novice Network and Mentor status used, I don't think they're fit for purpose. I think they need to be reworked. The mentor crown is more like an achievement reward and my experience of novice network was a load of mentors with bad unhelpful attitudes who weren't exactly novice friendly.

I think it's a good idea to have, but probably needs a different implementation if a better one is possible or better moderation. I worry what kind of impression of the wider community gets from the novice network, at least from the kind of experiences I've seen and what this guy is doing here.

Heck, I stopped bothering with the mentor crown because I don't need one to be helpful to new players.

That ignores all the people it helps on a daily basis. You only have to visit around the worlds and watch each novice network for several hours to see how much help gets provided.

In a video I watched recently from a new player, it was noted as a highlight of why the game is good. One person I spoke to in a novice network recently said they wouldn't have continued playing if we hadn't brought them into there and answered all their questions and that it changed everything for them. I have plenty more of these sort of stories. You don't fix a small problem like spam by entirely removing the thing that is getting spammed.

Disabling NN will not solve anything, because I can pretty much guarantee that he will spam the same nonsense in the starting city states. So disabling NN really wouldn't fix anything.

NN just needs a dedicated GM monitoring it at all times really. As we've seen across threads and posts here and around the internet Mentors are not good moderators for the NN. X mentor kicks Y player for something then Z mentor kicks X mentor for kicking Y player and it all turns into "he said, she said" nonsense.

Largely depends on the server. On mine the NN is very helpful, all while having random conversations. It is policed pretty well, in my opinion. It's not immune to drama, but overall it isn't a bad experience. There are a few fellow mentors that I don't always get along with, but I've learned to just tolerate them. Or blacklist them. lol

I'm amazed they don't have GMs monitoring the NN.
Especially since GMs seem to mainly be able to look at chat logs.
And especially since anyone can be a mentor so long as they've done the requisite content.
