Reading this story now, it's all pretty horrid.
I really hope their main got permabanned.

It would never have an effect on me. I would ignore the person. Its very easy. You choose to inflate something that is very minor. That is your decision. I personally would not waste a single second on that type of person. All you are doing is empowering them.

The problem you have is that you only care about yourself.
While yes, all these mentors and some newbies maybe can just ignore this kind of thing knowing that it's just one rotten apple that obviously has some problems, those players that literally joined as this was happening might not find it easy to ignore.
And that is what matters here - the fact that the first impression of the community that new players get was absolutely ruined by that not very smart individual.

And doing their macro spam in Novice Network.
"Look to those, who've walked before, to lead those who walk after."
We were just hit three times in the past hour with this guy's hateful garbage over on Gilgamesh, and as of his last one it seems that he's started linking to this thread in his spam.
Honestly, the guy must be dedicating hours to this. Hilarious to think that they're raging this hard over a little crown next to someone's name.

About the only thing that you can do is keep reporting them and kicking them from the NN. It's tedious, but it's better than nothing. We were just hit three times in the past hour with this guy's hateful garbage over on Gilgamesh, and as of his last one it seems that he's started linking to this thread in his spam.

This person has to have a screw loose somewhere.. right? Like.. even a troll would surely feel like they have better things to do than spam vitriol in an MMO all day for months on end.

This is literally next to impossible. At the end of his macro spam, he has /novicenetworkleave. If you're quick enough, you can do it when he starts spamming the macro, but 9.9/10, he's already left NN because of how he has his macro set up.

Some people live for the reaction and will do things over and over and over until they're silenced - which often is difficult online due to all the workarounds that exist for determined players.
I'll say one thing, though - FFXIV does seem to have a high number of players with petty grudges who take things too far.
In the 'good old days', players themselves had the power to police their own communities online. Yet in the present day, naming and shaming rules are exploited to prevent problematic players from being held accountable. I'm well aware that fake gossip/slander happens and thus makes the naming and shaming rules necessary to a degree, though.
