Nice idea, but this would cause Mentor roulette activity to plummet immediately following a patch, for a good couple weeks.
So maybe there would need to be a 2 week lag time on this, or it's activated in the .x1 patches.
I'm actually curious. How heavily dependent are we for mentors to fill slots?
Admittedly, when I did my 2000 runs for the mentor mount and finished up - I realized the queues were relatively quick despite going in there as DPS. Are people really not queueing that much?
It's silly to think that a system like that would be an "ooops I made one person mad, now i'm no longer a mentor" thing.No. You'd just get more self-righteous narcissists who think even more highly of themselves for wearing a Mentor crown.
You can not break the rules, and superficially appear to be helping, while still being a total asshat.
People who genuinely want to help other people will not want to run the risk of being targeted for higher levels of judgement via some Mentor policing system, or leave themselves open for harassment and abuse by people who know they can just 'report' you for a nebulous claim like 'not being helpful' and get your Mentor status removed.
I'm very interested as to why you in particular are so very negative about putting restrictions and checks on who is a mentor. You don't need a mentor tag to help people. I used to do it all the time before we got the system.
The whole purpose of a checks and review system is so that someone can review what you did after you get so many reports and see that "oh yeah.. that person IS being a jerk even though they're technically helping, maybe we shouldn't have them in the system". If someone wants to feel superior about themselves and they do so by genuinely helping people and not antagonizing anyone.. let em.
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?
It's rare to see rude mentor on Light. Still I hear that mentors are next thing to "censored " on reddit.
Not at all. All you've removed is a bunch of entitled people who like having a crown next to their name.
The real mentors are the players who are out there helping other players because they want to. They don't worry about meeting a bunch of requirements so they can have a crown next to their name.
People who help others... will help others regardless. Not at all. All you've removed is a bunch of entitled people who like having a crown next to their name.

We're talking about the Mentor system, and Mentor roulette.
What people don't seem to be grasping here, is that you don't need a crown to help others out. And you shouldn't have to go looking for someone with a crown to ask for help either.
All of this 'only the best people should get the Mentor crown' is just another form of feeling entitled to have that crown. Except instead of 'I have a crown because I've played the game for a while', it'll be 'I have a crown because I'm a better person than everyone else' and that's just as toxic, if not more so.
Mentors know the mentor system is easy to get into, they know they didn't earn their crown, they don't expect people to hold them in any higher regard because of it, usually. Under this proposal to police the behaviour of Mentors, which will not work out the way you imagine it will, 'Mentor' will be a mark of a self-righteous knowitall.
Novice network is already a clique, this will make it even worse, as those self-righteous enough to be there will feel all the more justified in gatekeeping it from others.
Mentor roulette serves it's own purpose. To fill queues for things that aren't typically on other roulettes (as well as those that are) and to provide an additional incentive for filling those queues.
By kicking people out of the mentor system, you're not stopping people from giving bad advice, or improving the quality of the help people receive, or making it any easier for people to find help.
All you're doing, is preventing people from accessing Mentor Roulette. Stopping people from accessing content in the game.

The main reason I'd want the mentor requirements to be made stricter is so you'd have less dead weight taking up the limited space in the Novice Network.
Of course, they could also fix that by just making the NN opt-in only because most of these people don't even seem to realize they're blocking those who actually care about offering advice in the channel during prime time.
Just remove the crown from normal use and a lot of bad mentors don't want to be mentor anymore.
I know quite a few who are just mentor to wear this special crown that not everyone has.
And these people don't know the basic of any class beside their own main and even on it they are just average.
About the mentor chat... I want to avoid unnecessary conflict and discussion so I'm no longer joining it.
They're fine I feel that raising the bar again just will make sure nobody mentors. Not to mention making quotas turns it into a new job you gonna start paying people fifteen an hour to sit on their butt and play all day long and do nothing else so bills get payed?
People are either going to Mentor or they're not. That said while it would be nice if they did what they signed up for your solution is not how to go about it.

"Sometimes I wonder I heal for fun. or if I heal because I'm a glutton for punishment."
I feel the biggest problem with the mentor system is that it's a prestige system, meaning wearing the mentor crown is like wearing certain titles in the game. So it doesn't get used much for its intended purpose and the Novice Network also ends up with a lot of unhelpful people. I get why they have it set it up as it is because they want to ensure the people who're using it to help newbies know what they're talking about. But when I used to be a mentor and was in the Novice Network, there was just a lot of toxicity and if that's the impression new players get of the FFXIV community then I don't see it as all that inviting.
I feel like they should go in the opposite direction and just abolish all requirements and just leave it as a toggle. It loses all prestige of having one and the only incentive to use it is because you want to help people. If you want to incentivise people for being helpful then maybe offer rewards for helping people instead. In my experience the most helpful people aren't mentors because they help people because they want to and not because they've gone out of their way to earn a crown. And heck, I stopped caring about mentor status the more they added to keep it because I don't need one to help people, to me it should serve as a nice indicator to say "hey, I'm somebody you can ask questions or help from".
