Throw a big enough tantrum, anyone can get anything they want. That's what customer service is about. Have to weigh the energy, time and money lost if you didnt cave in against the benefits of not caving in to the whiner(s).it's always good to see when the feedback is considered in the forums, so already kudos for that.
in this case it was probably because in ALL language forums the majority did not agree about the method of the merge.
oh and to all the "STOP TEH CRYING! U CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT SO DEAL WIT IT!1" guys:
(^.^)..i..
Now we have to worry about inactives clogging up servers so no on can transfer to them during the merge. All because so many of you wanted to play with your imaginary friend.
people dont care about that
they care that their 1 friend they miss who "might" come back next year wont be on the same server as them
and for that reason they throw a fit

I'm going to post for a second time what i read from someone else in the first place.
if you were in favor of the original plan, you obviously have no friends in this game.
I will add, they don't have to be good friends either, they are just the people you and i have been playing with since launch. They are a kind of family and that these connections we make, no matter how small, do matter. Knowing as i did in FFXI, that many of the same people i met in 2004 on that game, i still crossed paths with once in a while in 2010. If you really hate em all that much, hopefully there's a world transfer service for you and better luck next time.

Make it happen.
Really? Why do people always use this as an argument point? If they're your actual friends you would have no problems contacting them outside of the games or a forum to coordinate.
It's as simple as that.
I'm so happy community input actually matters. Yoshi and his team are currently number 1 on the list of best developers of 2012.
I mean, yeah, there are certain things we don't know about the development and we won't all agree on everything; but if there's things that really trouble the community, they're willing to reassess their decision.
Personally, I didn't really care how it was done.
I mean, they were giving you the choice and
they'd choose for you if you didn't in the allotted time.
This just feels like a "if we bitch hard enough, they'll cave" tactic.
Agreed, however most people don't know the difference and they just demand what they want immediately. We could have voiced our opinion without all the needless flaming and bashing of Yoshida and the dev team that went on both on here and in-game.
