But isn't arc archer? They already had an existing class with that acronym when arcanist was added to the game...I like abbreviations I can read out whenever possible, so ARC to me is better than ACN by a wide margin. Although I reference that so little that I think I just spell it out all the way rather than the abbreviation. Should be SMN or SCH at the point we are taking frequent repeats of use that justify needing an acronym, rather than ACN lol.

What's archer? lol There is only bard.
Funny to be reminded that's actually in the game. I don't think I've disused that in years. . (archer), no point to bring it up in normal conversations xD.
Arcanist gets mentioned because of the whole SCH / SMN split thing.
Maybe not the best example then but I still like ARC over ACN (yet clearly taken, by a relic of time), or maybe another example in that I like PUG instead of PGL. BOT instead of BTN.
Like if I was referring to Alchemist I'd be happy to use ALC but Carpenter never registers, at least in some natural way, as CRP. Crrrrppp. See.. Role play.. krr... paaah.. Honestly I'd probably prefer to call them CAR lol.

NGL the mage ones i dont particularly like... i like that the mage ones are consistent throughout - WHM, BLM, RDM, I only wish they'd figure out how to make BLU more consistent with the other mages - maybe switch up black mage to BKM and Blue mage to BLM.
They could always go with BUM for Blue Mage.

In case it was appearing like I was suggesting SE needs to change job abbreviations I was mostly just describing a personal quirk preference that things have a sound over just letters.
Like you don't say L A N. You say Lan, like almost a mandarin name- lan kai or something. Often things that don't have a good sounding but potential to make a sound abbreviations / acronyms get shifted a little. Like Why-fy, or lol is often just thought as sounding akin to lul (not L O L, unless you're a valley girl "like oh my god that's so L O L" or trying to be "hip").
Or at least that's how my brain goes about it. Even if I'm not going to say it to someone at least there is a 'sound' for it in my brain. Not an important issue, at least to me, just one I think is fun to discuss and share.
Haha, perfect :P
Like SAM (in the game already) and my brain is like YEE SAMURAI. But MCH.. Mmmmcch.. Ma.....ch... Matcha! If it was MAC at least it would have a strong sound association (might start some jokes on big mac job or whatever, but you'd never ever forget it lol).
Changed my mind, it's important for SE to change the abbreviations. We need BUM.

I disagree - MCH works better as a condensed version of the key sounds - it reads as "mush" to me, perfectly valid as the first part of the full word, but "mack" is not.
By the same logic, ACN ("a-kun") reads fine for arcanist but ARC is bad for archer, though there isn't much room to do anything else that represents the sound better.
As for mages, I highly appreciate black mage being an explosive "blam".

It's because those Job abbreviations (and many others) originated in FFXI and SE just reused the same abbreviations here (specifically; WHM, BLM, RDM, BLU, SMN, SCH, PLD, DRK, WAR, DRG, MNK, NIN, SAM, BRD and DNC abbreviations were all from FFXI originally), probably for consistancy.
Also some class abbreviations were originally different in FFXIV version 1.0 at launch, but were changed later on (after Yoshi took charge as new producer and director) to the abbreviations we now have in ARR (specifically, GLA was GLD, CNJ was CON and PGL PUG.). I can only speculate why SE changed them, but confusion with other classes or terms or maybe trying to avoid bad jokes about Conjurer being a 'con' might have had something to do with it.![]()
