I would also just in general say when it comes to language used and topics discussed, that there's a bit of a monkey house effect. If you've been in that environment for long enough, you don't even notice it, but if you're stepping in for the first time, you can DEFINITELY smell those monkeys. So even if you're unaware that you've said something that would be considered inappropriate, there's aways a chance you've been so immersed in that environment that what seems normal doesn't come across as having crossed the line to the casual observer.
That's honestly one of my thoughts. While I do not believe in ERPing in public, and believe that it should always be in private where it is consensual.

There is still a chance that I said something I'd otherwise be unaware of crossing the line on. Uldah on Balmung is where I often hang out, and it's very easy to get too used to the naughty Norm that it is in shout chat. That's another reason why I wish they told me. I have absolutely no idea what I may of done that someone was offended by. I feel really bad that I may have made someone upset.

I'm wanting to give you a big old hug. Try to not get so in your head about this; from other things you've said here, it sounds like you've got more important things to concern yourself with. If indeed you did do something, perhaps the upset person has read this and forgives you. I know I would. Keep your chin up. What happened sucks, yes, but it's had its time, you did the time! Just bear in mind that thing Shibi said earlier in the thread (good advice for anyone who wants it) - if you're talking in a public space, act like it's your grandma you're talking to - covers swears and ERP, innuendo, etc. So long as your gran subscribes to Victorian era etiquette codes and she's not Catherine Tate's "Nan" character, that is.

With respect to improving the gaol system, I don't know there's much SE can or will do. I would simply ask them to take on board the negative effect the experience may have on the prisoner and ask them to be as mindful of that as much as I would ask the prisoner to mindful of their own behaviour in future. I would remind all parties you're still dealing with real live humans here, even if they're represented as pixels, and not to lose sight of that.

LOL there isn't enough room in that jail to hold everyone for offensive ERP chat in Ul Dah on Balmung. I often go there to be entertained while waiting on a duty to pop.

So if you're afraid you said something that crossed the line that could have offended someone, and upset that you got sent to gaol so you're going to be more careful from now on, doesn't that mean that the gaol served its purpose?

Edit: Another tip to not get thrown in gaol is to not defend yourself. It's a little messed up but I know of people who got thrown in gaol because they fought back. If a GM sees a report and goes into the logs and sees two people cussing each other out, it's not a good look for either one of them.

In the instances where someone didn't like me and kept swearing and telling everyone to report me, I just stay silent since their report is only going to look bad for them. I don't care enough to defend myself against random people on the internet who aren't worth my time who I'm never going to see again and it's a shame a lot of people take internet drama personally.

You can't fix what got in in trouble if they don't tell you what it is that you did. Saying "you said something bad" does not help. You need to know what you said that was bad. This is why

OP was banned for offensive language/ content, according to their first post. Most reasonable people knowing that the ToS forbids swearing at the very least so they'd probably stop swearing around strangers and if they're the kind of person who drops slurs or casually makes sexual references they'd stop that, too. its really not that hard.

That doesn't actually solve the issue. Did he swear, was it something else? Etc. You cannot hope to fix something when you are not told what it is. Not to mention the number of things I see happening every single day that violates the ToS with no punishments. This is basic discipline stuff.

you only really get dragged off to jail if someone reports you for it. I swear all the time on FC chat, because I know the people there will not report it. but if someone tells you, you've used offensive language you should not need to be told "you called little Johnny a [redacted] yesterday" to know "hey, maybe I should watch my mouth in public channels."

I need to ask all of you a question then. What defines offensive language? You all act like you know, and that I should have been punished, and just know what shouldn't be said..

So tell me? What defines offensive language. Be specific.

And if that is the first time you've ever been reported? You have no bearing on what it was you said to trigger the offense, so again, you cannot correct the issue since you do not know what triggered the offense.
