It is what it is, unfortunately. We'll see how things play out in May.

What the game truly needs in my opinion is a major competitor. At the moment it doesn't really have one. There's other MMO's out there, of course - and they're not doing terribly but they have wildly different priorities and graphical styles.

Who knows what the future holds, though? Before I played FFXIV, I played WoW. I lost interest in that game but still have fond memories of the period that I played it enthusiastically. I tried out many MMO's and they didn't lure me in until FFXIV managed to captivate me. Yet more and more, the game itself is starting to move away from what I liked about it. The story no longer has the grit and consequences of the days of ARR and HW. There's increasing 'limitations' and any suggestions to do with masculine hairstyles and character customisation options are shot down or branded 'too difficult'. (Not that it stops the developers from making a huge fuss about how the 2B outfit alters the butt of female characters, which I assume isn't too different to how stubble could be implemented for male characters?)

The game's good enough for me to use as a way to pass free time when I'm not playing other games, though I'd be lying if I said a lot of that wasn't just due to the fact that world is locked down at the moment. If and when a proper competitor emerges, I'll be jumping ship - unless the development team remembers that male characters exist and make up roughly half the population of player characters.

I've recently been playing Monster Hunter World and found myself amazed at how much fanservice and customisation options there are. It's a pseudo MMO, too.
