I'll jump in when our FC is doing group content like raids and stuff. Some of us play other games together as well and we'll get in discord while doing those too. But just to hang out? No I don't jump into discord for that and no one in our FC really does that either. We talk mostly in-game. As to why for me - I've been playing games before chat apps were around and I'm used to not using them. I also can only handle so much audio stimulation at a time and if I get too much it's not good. Sometimes I even play the game with super low sound.

While it is to each their own for this type of thing(Discord vs in-game chat), the Discord chat - especially the voice chat - is best for high end raiding since you don't have to take the time to type out anything, and can discuss it in real time as it needs to be dealt with. Though I don't do the high end raiding, I know a few people who do and that's what they primarily use it for. I used to have friends that I would talk to while doing stuff in game over PS chat, or even Discord if more people were using that over PS chat, but that doesn't mean game chat was dead to us too(there was almost always someone asking something in FC/party chat)

This conversation somehow devolved into typed chat vs discord which was never the question. I questioned why an FC would advertise the use of Discord then not use it for the purpose of voice as typed chat, as many have stated, is covered by in-game FC chat. I am an older gamer and I find the use of speaking much more efficient while playing than watching in-game text.

Because it comes down to personal preference, and how cliquey the people are. The FC I'm currently in used to have a fairly active discord server(both voice and text channels always had activity), then statics formed and it went dead silent. I used to be second in command for the FC, but when everyone ignored ANYTHING I would say(not even responding with a no thanks, or anything at all), I dropped my own rank down to have no control of anything. Now, I am still the most active person(in case the current lead decides not to log in within the timeframe before lead transfers to someone else) so that all the work I did put into it doesn't go to waste. I don't even talk in FC chat because of the fact 90% of the time, I'm the only one on, and I even left that discord server because it was dead(and tied to things I wanted to leave behind).

Gotcha. I can understand the question, but it may just be how that FC uses it. Our FC doesn't advertise, it's just friend of friends of friends and new people we play with that may end up joining. If we did advertise though I'm sure we would say we have a discord just so people know that we have that available - it's just our FC really only uses it when we are actively doing some group content together (raids, extremes, maps, etc). But we in general don't use the chat outside of that. We don't just get in and chat on discord while doing our own things in the game. But we do use the text feature throughout the day pretty much every day just to talk about random stuff even when not in the game.

My FC advertises having a discord because we do have a discord. We have text channels and keep up with each other, share information, memes, and whatever that way when we are away from the game. When we are in game, we use FC chat. Having a discord doesn’t automatically mean an FC are in there gabbing all the time. My suggestion is to message the FC lead/officer or even a member of the FC you are thinking of joining beforehand and ask about it.

Why don’t we as an FC advocate for or encourage use of the voice channel since we have a discord? Most of us just have other stuff going on. Or anxiety. Or both.

There are just as many people super into voice chatting as there are averse to it. My alt FC has people in voice pretty much 24/7. My main has people in voice like once every few months. Both are similar in size and equally socially active, just in different ways.

Funny you say this because back in my day guilds were always in ventrilo and teamspeak. You'd think all members online were anti-social with how quiet guild chat would be. Games also generally had very poor systems to actually connect people not in guilds, and these voice/text services bridged communities together.

Discord is just the natural evolution of those systems (forums, voice, and text chats all rolled into one).

Edit: I just remembered some of the MMOs I grew up with didn't even have friends lists. The ONLY way we could see if anyone was online was through another service.

    1. If I am going through the MSQ I don't want to have someone talking in my ear when I am trying to watch/listen to a cutscene.

    2. I am a naturally reserved person and don't feel the need to talk constantly or listen to others do the same.

    3. The headset gets very heavy and makes my neck hurt if I wear it for hours on end particularly after a long day at work.

    4. I have a southern accent and have often in gaming discords caught a LOT of crap for it. Never assume I am stupid because I sound southern.

Yeah, pretty much what I've been thinking whole time. The whole "we only used text" struck me as odd. Discord wasn't always a thing, but voice chat was used. I used to use teamspeak all the time. I actually only started using discord a few years ago, because everyone moved there. Ironically, I actually use discord more for text chat nowadays.

Except typed chat is not truly covered in game because there's no record kept. Someone logging in 5 minutes after a conversation started isn't going to know what was said in those first 5 minutes unless everyone repeats themselves. Someone who isn't logged in can't be part of the conversation.

With Discord, those issues are solved. We can have conversations going on with some members logged into FFXIV, some into other games, some at work, some at home and some on vacation in another part of the world using their mobile app to keep in touch. Join the conversation late? Scroll back up and read through fast to see what you missed.

The other problem with voice is people talking over one another in multiple conversations. If there are only 3 people in voice, there's not a problem. When the number increases past that, you end up with chaos as multiple conversations start going on simultaneously, you've got the player who talks nonstop regardless of what conversations are going on then gets pissed when no one is talking back to them, etc. It gets chaotic.

It's not an effective means of social chatting for large groups of people that naturally break off into different conversations.
