    1. I'm not native English speaker, so I'm very conscious about it. Writing is fine, speaking is a big no.

    2. Even in real life, I'm the quiet type (unless I'm with my best friends). Plus I'm shy too.

    3. My laptop audio has been bonkers lately. The speaker is not working anymore (so I have to use headphones), and the mic isn't working for Ms teams and Discord. Strangely, it only works with Zoom.

Edited Note: It's a sad thing that you consider an FC as people to talk with, rather than play with. It's sad, because in my experience with FF14, you're probably right.

But I've been playing MMO's since Everquest was in beta, when no voice chat even existed, and so know what a good guild is really about.

    Voice chat is not required.
    THIS! All of it!

I love my FC mates, and I chat with them on VC when we run content together, but for me... to hang out in a vc with more than 1 other person is not something I crave for because the laggy nature of virtual conferences makes the dynamic of convos a bit off for me. People always end talking on top of each other by accident and such.

Our FC is a little unusual as it's specifically for people with Social Anxiety. We do have Discord but use it mainly to keep in touch outside the game, voice is just for call-outs on higher end duties.
Anxiety is definitely one reason why people don't use voice. We're happy not to use voice for general chat as it means nobody gets left out of the conversation. Female players often avoid voice because they don't want to be harassed or treated differently because they are female and sadly, that still happens quite often.

I think it's a good idea to ask about voice when you are considering joining a FC, some use it a lot, others like us don't. There isn't a right or wrong here, you just have to find a group that works in a way you're comfortable with.

I only use discord for savage prog/reclear or when learning something new, and I don't do it within our fc discord. Most of my FC members are pretty casual and really don't want to touch hard content; unfortunatly, I don't have much to share with them, except for the language ( which is not english).
I don't like discord much to be honest. It creates clicks and split FCs into smalls groups who rarely communicate with others. I'm using FC chat as much as I can. But I'm an old school gamer, so it's something natural for me to just type instead of talking.

I enjoy using discord and chat with people while going through some stuff ingame but it took me a while to find a FC I click with. Several previous FCs were just not my cup of tea. Full twitch slang mode, whipping their virtual little friend out at every chance, a lot of humblebragging or outright boasting.
I was rarely in voice because that's just unpleasent company for me.
I prefer a more calm and mature surrounding but it was surprisingly hard to find here and I still often stick to my static mates for voice although FC voice is overall pleasent.
Chat can be nice aswell, though.

If a FC advertised voice and then doesn't use it, it's understandably a letdown. You might need a few tries to find something to your preference. There are many voice-based and chat-bases FCs, although some do sort of false advertising. Hop around until you find something to your liking.

Without people to talk with and get to know, I feel like I am just playing solo and the FC is only there for the buffs, but no community.
Assuming you mean talk as in actually talking through voice chat. The reason should be fairly obvious for some of us, introverts especially.. we don't want to because we neither feel comfortable with nor like voice chat.

I'm another one of those old-school gamers who prefer to type rather than talk. Besides, using Discord just seems overly fussy to me.
