While being entirely up front and that I have absolutely enjoyed FFXIV and I think it is a great choice for people to pick if they're looking for an MMO- I have occasionally expressed interest in SE working on an MMO in the background for many reasons including ones like this. Ranging from clearly dated choices and technology to simply it's sometimes cool just to get to feel that wonder of something new, like when you first put your 100 hours into an absolutely amazing open world game. It's not from a desire to see FFXIV fail, nor do I think it would if they chose to keep it alive longer, or if they decided to keep it alive next to another new mmo (akin to FFXI), just really...that occasional flicker of alternate possibilities.
Like what I, personally very imo, feel FFXIV misses quite a bit not only in a general sense but in comparison to some other mmos is a deeper sense of exploration and what I've just generically and nebulously calling role play. Elements that try to bind you down into the world, games like WoW and GW2 have (imo) done better on that front. Especially I feel a bit unfortunate on that front since I think "hello? Camps, inns, resting, tents, mognet, jobs, chocobos, airships? This is your space, this should be -your- thing! You guys have the set pieces to make this better than those other people!". Still baffles me that Ninja gets a damage reduction to fall damage and Dragoon not, lords of jumping and so the role paly should be self evident lol. As I said before above, and in the past on this topic, because I can speak well of other mmos doesn't mean I think FFXIV is terrible or something which I feel is a knee jerk reaction people have when you do something like that.. lol (in the larger scope I'd still recommend FFXIV). Of course sharper controls, more modern responsive combat (like imagine using FF7 remake's combat which has elements of the turn base still within it), less memory issues, etc.
So sometimes it's fun to imagine they're behind the scenes working on a new engine, after 6.0 completes they're like "yeah so.. NEW MMO, but of course we'll keep adding content to FFXIV cause we can". Maybe then FFXI goes mobile :3?
Again recap for those who feel I've spoken blasphemy, not knocking the game as terrible (I play the game because I think it's fun and good) - just have some that would best be fulfilled in a new game where the design can be represented not just from a new expansion but from the start (like I dearly wish they go back to the idea of mog room, but then take that idea and run miles and miles with it as you progress in the game - heading towards something closer to Wildstar). Final note would be that I don't think they have to make a new game to incorporate many of these elements, but I just envision them socketing into core pieces that would be quite difficult to appropriately appreciate given such a late addition (like when WoW went through cataclysm, and other major overhauls, FFXIV could do that too, but sometimes those changes like I said would have best been represented as if they were there from the start rather than added in post thought where it might be obvious that is exactly what they did).

I am just surprised that they continue to exclude headwear for the new races after seeing that people didn't like it.
I can totally understand not remodeling every single piece of gear from ages past, save for AF gear, but nothing made in ShB? Feels a bit tone deaf.
They do do headgear, just not hats. Hats are the one thing they will not touch. No exceptions, apparently.

It's because the models haven't been built in a way that is compatible with some types of headgear. It's not just a matter of them not retrofitting things - they were built with the mindset that they would never be compatible and that's just how it works.
Therefore the only way to make them never miss out on hats is to never give anyone full hats ever again.
Whether it was a sensible plan or not, it's what they did and why they continue to do it.
Heavensturn always gives the same style of helmets and they aren't going to break the pattern now.
