The outcome is the same. You use unnecessary stacks so you can use energy drain.

You still have access to regular Energy Drain, but you get a free use of Energy Drain if you use Aetherflow on something not Energy Drain. That's how TBN works: you use the MP on the shield or damage, but if the shield protected you/someone, then you get the damage as well. You don't have to make a choice between them, and you use the skill as it was intended. That's the problem SCH is having right now: Aetherflow isn't being used as intended, but that's because there's no incentive to do so.
