In both SW:TOR and FFXIV I picked up the game because of the story and stayed for the MMO. In fact I left SW:TOR largely because of diminishing story updates. If SE stops releasing new story for FFXIV, I'll be out of here too.
I played SW:TOR for a tiny bit (got bored) And I don't remember being forced to go through the story.

No one is saying SE should stop releasing quest/story content or implying that (Atleast I don't see anyone implying that) it's just that the story doesn't have to be forced on you. Plenty of people play mmos without ever paying attention to the lore at all and vise versa. Making a quest mandatory to complete is not going to make some one read the text.

I don't know if it's been changed in the five years since I stopped playing, but I distinctly recall that back then you couldn't even get off your starter planet before completing the four quests for your class there. And then you had to complete another four class quests on your capital planet to get your spaceship. After that I think you were able to fly to any planet, but I'm not sure if any of the planet quests or flashpoint (= dungeon) unlocks were available without advancing your class story. And many of the flashpoints were locked behind mini-storylines of their own. In any case you'd have to be stupid to not do the class quests (unless you went for the paid level skip option) since at some point they changed them to give enough experience points that you didn't need to do anything else to level up.

We're talking star wars the old republic right? Just making sure cause I think there was two star wars mmo? I played SWTOR within the last 2 or 3 years? It wasn't really long but I remember my friend telling me what to do and it didn't have much to do with questing.

Are we still talking XIV here? I didn't play SWTOR to even remember/deal with level skips in that game.

Both of those related to Star Wars: The Old Republic. The other Star Wars MMO you're thinking of is probably the earlier Star Wars Galaxies, which was a more open sandbox type thing. I started playing SW:TOR in 2012 and, looking at the OTP emails, the last time I logged on was in August 2016. I don't know what has changed since then. If you didn't do quests I'm kinda curious about how you got off your starter planet? Did you ever do any flashpoints or raids?

When I say I didn't play long, I literally mean like 2 days at MOST lol. It wasn't a game I was interested in, I was just playing it because my friend asked me to. I could actually be wrong, I just want to clarify me saying "I don't remember" doesn't mean it didn't happen, just that I honestly don't remember.

All right, with that little playtime it's possible you never did get off your starter planet if you tried to level up by just killing enemies. Or if you weren't interested in the story, maybe you just skipped all the cutscenes. Which would certainly make the game seem bland and uninteresting. Being a Bioware game, its main selling point (aside from being an Star Wars MMO) was the story. It has voice acting and motion captured animations in every cutscene. Your character has a voice and in most cases you get to pick your own lines from two or three options. What you say affects how the NPCs respond too, though the overall course of the conversation rarely changes, and the story will arrive at the same conclusion regardless of your choices. No other MMO I've played or heard of gets even close to SW:TOR when it comes to storytelling. FFXIV's story is good but many cutscenes lack voice acting and use stock emotes which often ends up looking slightly stiff and unnatural.
