I like how the message of the OP, the overuse of a theme (possibly brought on by our dev’s penchant for craming in similar tropes and blatant references to Game of Thrones), was completely lost on all of these people who most likely just skimmed their post accusing them of being thin-skinned, among other things.

They didn’t say this is something this game shouldn’t explore, they said it’s becoming a thing they’re commonly applying to characters for bonus, low effort drama points.

I agree with you crysten this person needs to seek professional help. I've also been a victim of sexual abuse but I would never speak with so much hate and anger in my heart nor make light of being sexually abused regardless of gender it can happen to both men and women , some women hate men so much based on certain experiences that they tend to forget that and blame all men based on the actions of few . not all people are the same treat everyone as individuals. for anyone who needs to hear this YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM FOR SHARING YOUR STORY. You honestly might want to see a professional, as it cannot be healthy if you're letting the experience define you like this.

The story paints it as one of many reasons for us to hate the antagonists, along with murder, slavery, poverty and all that other good stuff. I'm sorry you don't want to see this, but that's what age ratings/PEGI/the ESRB are for and the way the game has been in terms of tone since ARR. Funny story; while getting my lore book signed by Koji at Fanfest he actually said to me (probably jokingly) that all new hires to the localization team are forced to read/watch GoT if they haven't already, so of course there's inspiration there.

Also, as someone who has been sexually abused in the past, I would think you'd know better than to make light of male rape when men can be, and very much are, victims of both domestic and sexual abuse (even though it is definitely skewed in one direction). Men often have just as much, if not more difficulty in dealing with it due to the additional social pressure because of gender roles and the idea of being ridiculed for being raped by a woman.

Using this as an argument to convince people to not put implied rape in a game is absurd, and awfully sexist. If anything, I agree with you. At least then we could say it's being gender equal!

Yes, I noticed it showed up all over the place, especially in the sidequests.

In fact, I was absolutely certain they were building towards Lyse being a child of rape.
Look at her father, with skin 20 shades darker than Lyse. Then look at all the blond haired, blue eyed Garleans.
But if SE actually even meant to imply that, they sure didn't follow through with it.

. I felt sorry for Yotsuyu and I so wished that she could have been fully redeemed. That is why I hate Asahi more than anyone because he knew exactly what to do to trigger her. She had been so badly used and abused by everyone she had ever trusted that she had gone into a dissociative state. If she could have stayed Tsuyu and gone and lived her life somewhere with Gosetsu, it would have been perfect for them both. She needed someone to care for her as well as someone to take care off and the same goes for him (in a family way, not romantic). I cried when they did what they did to her character at the end. She was someone who deserved to be redeemed.

On topic, however, the amount of rape in XIV never struck me as particularly glaring or egregious. When I first saw this title, I was sort of scouring my brain for characters who had been explicitly abused in this manner, but Yotsuyu was among the few I could think of...and with her it was kind of more implied?

This is what I appreciate in this game. They don’t shy away from some of these darker themes, but they are mostly implied and are never explicit. If you closely read all of the dialogue, you pick up on a lot of stuff. A lot of it isn’t good because much of the timeline is wartime. But crap happens regardless.

One thing I do hate is the fact that most ‘pleasure’ industry women are depicted as Miqo'te. What canonical reason is there for that? The fact that we do not have a home (or at least one shown in the game yet...besides Forgotten Springs which belongs to a single tribe). Yes, the Miqo’te are nomadic and hunters, but we need somewhere to hang our hats. Getting off point. Anyway, Miqo’te have teeth and claws and are hunters by nature, so why do this “work” for a worm of a potato? Some would say money, I suppose. But the same could be true of females of any race. By and large, it is always Miqo’tes.
