True that in both cases it wouldnt offer anything new, but it does mean those systems are in place. The other possibility could be far worse than either suggestion to the XI BST fans, but that system is in place as well: only have 3 or 4 pets based on roles, like the egi system, and focus on charming enemies/distracting them/pinning them down. Perhaps the collectable mini game would become like monster rancher, where as the gameplay is even less about tossing pokemon out? Not really a big fan of BST, as i assume it was XI's evolution of a job from 5 that just trapped one monster, held onto it for however long and then released it for a big attack in either the same battle or later battles.
